Virgin Media Discussion Thread

Just had the SH2 installed, my word what a difference in terms of speed and importantly the range over the wireless compared to the SH1, tech guy said that mine was useless for wifi, didnt know why just the modem itself was buggered, now get full signal all over the house, and on 2.4ghz downstairs on the laptop getting around 60mb speed test on the 120mb, and on my note 3 on 5ghz getting 107mb speed test :)

Hey Guys,

Is there a benefit of changing the default VM DNS to something like OpenDNS or Google DNS? If so, how the hell do I do it on the Superhub2. I must have missed it going through the settings.

That functionality was deliberately stripped out of the SH1 so customers could not change the DNS. I don't know if that was changed for SH2.

DNS lookups may take fractionally longer, but a good router will then cache the results (so the SHubs probably don't). You will get faster updates (VM's DNS is notorious for slow updates), can use some specialist filtering DNS services.

You may find some issues - for instance, services like Youtube and Akamai use regional DNS to direct you to a closer caching node. If you're using Googles DNS, you may find your videos from Youtube buffer because you're getting them from the states, instead of closer to home.

A decent router will usually allow 2-3 DNS servers to be specified, so I have VMs DNS, OpenDNS and Google's DNS in there if I can, and that covers all the bases.

weather? the cables are in the ground, what's weather got to do with it?

I've been told stories like this before - all looks ok from here, restart SH blah blah, after 3rd phone call engineer comes to find out the cable to my property has been disconnected in the cabinet (most likely by someone working there before)

Wondered why my connection died last night around half 12, still down now and service status says:

snip

I was raving earlier this year about how little downtime I'd experienced since I joined VM about 7 years ago. Since then the conn has gone down four times for reasonable periods of time, the last being yesterday when it was down all day and never came back until sometime after I left for work this morning, despite the message on 150 yesterday evening saying it ought to be fixed by 9pm ish.

Hopefully they'll get their act together and stop buggering up the conn when I actually want to use it ;)

thought as much, will get on the phone tomorrow and request an engineer. (hopefully will get through to a UK centre)

Ahhh and it was going so well! 2 random disconnects tonight, blue sync light turned green and top light flashing like the other day when there was a known fault. It came back live by itself just now...

Had a scary moment just now with my email. Just spent hours composing various word document reports and emails that had to be sent by tonight. Pressed send and kept getting the authorize box appearing suggesting my email password was wrong. Tried it a few times and kept failing to send. Gaaaah!

I'd just changed my password a few days ago due to receiving more phishing emails from those fake idiots pretending to be VM. But I'd received some emails this evening right up till 7.15pm so couldn't figure it out. Thought I was going to have to change the password again. I took a look in my Ntlworld email account properties/advanced tab in windows live mail. Server port number said 465 SMTP outgoing mail, and 995 for POP3 incooming mail. Without knowing what I was doing, I clicked 'Use Defaults' and the SMTP changed to 25 while POP3 remained the same. I'd memorised the 465 just in case. Just as well too! So the 25 failed. I put 465 back in and hey presto, everything worked again and my emails got sent. Phew! No idea why I had to alter then replace the same number for it to work.

Yes I know, tl;dr :p

Just had the price increase letter saying my bill will go up an extra £5.75 a month which i think is scandalous. I'm on the triple xxl package with no TiVo box or Super Hub 2, i phoned up and about Tivo they wanted an extra £4-5 on top of what i pay now which is £71.79 a month. Is this price about right?, what annoys me more is with there new customer collections they get the Tivo and Super Hub 2 included.

Just got my letter. Increase of £5.75 also. On 120mbit XL TV and XL Phone. But after seeing the prices for new customers, even with their £100 cashback deals at the moment I'm still happy with it.
