trying to install gelid icy rev 2 on radeon 290, the problem im getting is that after the installation the card is not detected in the system. I took it off and installed the reference cooler, the thing is working fine with stock cooler. what could be the problem? the heatsinks for vram and dram are all intact. i've tried to resit cooler on gpu few times,no luck. fans are spinning ok. any advice?

Did you have any problems fitting it? did it go well, followed the instructions ecte...

I've tried to loosen screws,it didn't help.
there was no problems, just had to take about 1mm of one of the heatsinks thats all.
as soon as I put stock cooler back,it works fine,i'm totally lost here.

"just had to take about 1mm of one of the heatsinks thats all." ?

Can you explain that please?

I had to sand off about 1mm of vram heatsink, because it was too high and the gpu heatsink could not sit properly on gpu.

When you put the original cooler back on did you take the Memory HS off?

Can you refit the new cooler without the Memory HS for a test run, don't put it on to tight :)

yeah when i put stock cooler i take all the ram heatsinks off, otherwise it wouldnt fit. theres a gap between the heatsinks for ram and gpu now.

I got the Gelid for my 290x and got no problem. This is a weird problem, consider other than the cooler being different, the PCB/card itself is connected exactly the same.

For your fans, do you connect it directly to the card PCB's fan header, or are you powering it by external power? I connect the header directly to the PCB.

It looks like when your fitting the new cooler one of the metal part is coming into contact with an electrical node which is shorting out the card preventing it from booting. I would look at the instructions again and look at what parts of the heatsink is coming into contact with.

Did you get the right Geild Icy rev 2.0? There are two versions of this. I know a few people who had ordered the Geild Icy REV 2.0 with the part number GC-VGA02-02.

But what you actually need is part number GC-VGA02-01. It's for the 290/290x cards.

Yes, it's kinda weird that the newer part number is for the older cards.

You have to be careful with aftermarket coolers when fitting them. If you tighten the cooler to hard onto the GPU its self it can cause problems or if any of the fittings touch anything on the PCB it can cause problems too.

Make sure nothing is making contact that can cause problems except the actual heat sink sitting on top of the GPU of course and that you have not tightened to cooler down too much. And do the corner to corner tightening method when screwing/tightening the cooler to the GPU.

instructions are very poor for this cooler.but i will try to connect only cooler without heatsinks for vram and dram and see if it works. Rregarding the version of this cooler its GC-VGA02-01.
I've tried both ways of connecting the fan to pcb and to motherboard, the fan is working in both cases,

did you fit the dram heatsink(long one) without making adjustment to the holes? because on my heatsink the holes were not drilled properly, they didnt fit the holes onPCB,had to widen them.

Oh, maybe they sent you the 02 version in the 01 box? I haven't heard of anyone having to sand the heatsinks down to make it sit right on the GPU.

This was a problem for the 02 version, it wouldn't fit right on the GPU with the heatsinks on.

is there part number on the cooler itself?I couldn't find it. Well I did sand the vram heatsink so it shouldn't be a problem now.

No the holes on the sink don't match the holes on the PCB...I did however use the some of the leftover thermal adhesive tape to secure the two ends of the sink and sticking the sink directly onto the PCB over the holes.

Sorry man i don't know. But the issue you describe sounds like a problem early adopters had fitting the older cooler to the card.

I got it sorted eventually, what I have done was fitted cooler itself with no heatsinks, checked if its working. then added ram sinks, checked if its working and then dram heatsinks and its working now. Looks ok now. During 3dmark test temp didnt go above 56C.

I think I might know what your problem is now that you mentioned it.

There's vram at the bottom, which if you fit the sink properly in position, it would be in the way of the square mental bracket. For that particular vram, I only have the vram sink covering the 2/3 of it's lower-half of the vram. I think the cooler might not have mounted properly because you've place the vram sink properly in position, and it conflict with the position of the metal bracket.
