why are local councils so incompetent?!

One would assume it has something to do with their recruitment policy. And the fact that when pay is peanuts, more often than not only monkeys will work for them.

No the only people who councils employ are failed school leavers and graduates with history degrees or they cry so much at every criticism they need a hug.

This.

Have you ever been to a public sector office? The pay and conditions are such that you will get a certain type of people working there, and a certain atmosphere within the offices which leads to very low productivity or attention to detail.

so true x2

I don't understand how you can have so many issues with Council tax over a ten year period with different Council's sounds more to the story here then them simply getting it wrong, I have paid Council tax for 17 years and never had an issue with three Councils, direct debit and all paid with no issues or fuss.

I've always found local councils to be very competent with their council tax operations until this year when they mucked up my bill like the OP. Co-incidentally this is the first year of a Capita outsourced operation for council tax

Exactly this!

If a court summons has been issued that's gone past the point of reminders of which you would receive at least 2/3 to your home address and its been passed to a bailiff, Councils don't tend to simply pass a case to a bailiff for one missed payment??

Never had an issue here either. Direct debit also means that it isn't really possible to have a missed payment unless you didn't have enough cash in the account.

Surely after the first supposed missed payment you set the direct debit up again?
