Hello all,

Got a really frustrating problem with my new-ish laptop. It has a switch-able graphics setup, but I haven't been able to use it the entire time I've had the laptop. I've only just got round to needing this setup and having time to fix it.

If I tried to open CCC or the switch-able graphics options it would tell me something along the lines of "No options to configure" and nothing would ever happen apart from that. Since then I have tried a variety of things:

Reinstalling CCC over existing CCC - New CCC fails to install/repair

I then un-installed CCC from Add/remove programs.

- AMD Driver automatic setup - Downloads incorrect 'mobility' drivers that cannont install.
- 'Normal' AMD drivers - Refuse to install, get the following error message.

'Application Install: install package failure!''

I have also tried this after running Guru 3d Driver Sweeper in safe mode and get the same message. The log that is output with this is as follows:

Here are the most relevant specs:

Intel Core i5 3427U
Intel HD Graphics 4000
AMD Radeon 8730m
Windows 8.1

I have a system restore point that takes me back to the broken version of CCC if needed.

I thought I could handle ordering a dell as I'm fairly good with computers - clearly not. Customer service is an absolute shambles and the product...well this thread speaks for itself. Arrived non-functional after waiting for it for far too long. At least it doesn't smell like cat **** (one of Dell's newer features).

Thanks for any help you have to offer.

I had the same problem with the Dell Inspiron 15r 7520 and it was very annoying not being able to install the drivers from AMD's website without errors (install package failure etc). There was also almost no relevant help from Dell, they seem to not have a clue how to fix this issue on the whole.

I have a 7730m on my 15r which is pretty similar to your 8730m. I used the a sort of custom driver particularly for switching graphics on this website:

http://leshcatlabs.net/2013/05/01/leshcats-catalyst-13-4-whql-unifl-v2-for-amdintel-powered-laptops/

I installed 13.4 as it works with Windows 8.1 but 13.6.2 does also which is here:

http://leshcatlabs.net/2013/06/11/leshcats-catalyst-13-6-beta-2-uniflfor-amdintel-powered-laptops/

There is a link to the manual for installation on the websites above.

It shows you to

1. Go to Control Panel > Uninstall a program then find and Uninstall AMD Catalyst Install Manager. select Express uninstall all AMD software and reboot (I think I also manually deleted a AMD folder from C: after this step but this may not be necessary).

2. Download and install Driver Fusion from http://treexy.com/products/driver-fusion The free version is fine. I right clicked the Driver Fusion shortcut and ran it as administrator with Windows 8.

Select Display then select AMD and Intel (on my version I had to do this one by one selecting the checkboxes) then delete.

I noticed that not all the files deleted and in the manual it suggests to go into safe mode and run Driver Fusion to delete the rest. I done this but it still seemed to leave some files but I moved on and had no problems.

This should be all the cleaning up needed, the rest of the steps in the manual are for Windows 7 only and could damage the ability to use other video drivers in Windows 8 if you follow those steps.

3. It's just a matter of installing the drivers now. Again I ran the installation file as administrator. My destination was: C:\Drivers\Catalyst_13.6_Beta_2_UnifL

When it asks to select components I used the Intel HD Graphics 9.17.10.2392 (Modern) but I think there is a newer version with the 13.6 beta 2 drivers. After the installation there should be a AMD installation file called "setup.exe" in the destination folder above. Run that as administrator and select Install > Custom then select the components you wish to install (I had them all selected) then next and follow the on screen instructions.

I find that all the games I use now switch automatically to the 7730m with these drivers although initially I went into Catalyst Control Center by right clicking on the desktop then selecting Graphics Properties > Power then I put all the settings to Maximize Performance in the PowerPlay and Switchable Graphics Global Settings.

You can manually select recently used games in the Switchable Graphics Application Settings to use High Performance. I usually use GPU-Z to see if the 7730m is being used by going to the Sensors tab and selecting to show the GPU Core Clock highest reading. I can check it after using a game to confirm the 7730m has been used as the highest reading should be 675Mhz for me.

Just another point to add that I get an extra fps boost in some games when I use ThrottleStop on my laptop because I find my i5-3230M does not really boost up to it's base clock speed of 2.6Ghz when I play games. Things may be different with your CPU though.

Oh I forgot to mention - Dell website drivers mean I get a completely black screen that never leaves before the install completes(though the computer still runs unseen). I have to system restore to get rid of it. Thanks for that RanzXy, ill go through it in detail when I get some free time and see what happens!.

So I followed the method RanxZy posted, and it was working for a bit. Tried to actually run a game today and it's gone back to it's old, broken ways. Just don't know what to do about this anymore
