Hi i got my MSI r9 290 today and i was wondering if everything is ok. I am not an expert on graphics card so i need some opinions if possible. I dont know which BIOS mode i am running. It has uber mode and quiet. Is there anyway to check it out?

After playing 1 hour of battlefield 4 i got the following results.
This screenshot was taken around 10-20 secs after i exited BF4. The card reached 90C while i was playing(max 94) which is ok for an r9 290.
Here is a screenshot of afterburner

The only thing i got a problem with are the cables. They are all grouped up in one place next to the card, i gotta do some cable managment. Any chance of having a problem with a wire getting heat from the gpu? I dont think so tbh, sounds stupid but i just wanted to ask :p

For those thinking of buying an r9 290 just buy it. It aint noisy at all. I was playing bf4 for 1 hour an the fan reached 36% at 90C. It was very very silent. No need to have it above 40-50%. The aftermarket gpus will be very expensive in my opinion. Thumbs up for r9 290 :p

Hah! 90c at 36% fan speed? Who would've known. :D

The gpu usage jumping all over the place is bug with afterburner, ignore it!

Heh, all the reviews said it was 90-95C with the fan at around 47-55% but that was a bunch of crap. 40% isnt that loud. Any way to see which bios i am running? Uber or quiet

Yeah never let the truth get in the way of a good story hey. I would assume you're on quiet mode there mate. :)

Mmm yeah :p But still it was a huge upgrade from my Sapphire 7770. I am happy with quiet mode, 60FPS with vsync on and a very high quality of graphics. If you turn vsync off the fps can go up to 120. Usually without vsync they are about 90 but the image is better with vsync on

Can't argue with that. :)

Unless i am misreading this, isnt Uber mode closest to the power connectors?

After reading the review yes

“Quiet Mode” – Bios position one. Switch is in position closest to where you plug in your displays. This mode is designed to optimally suit a gamer that wants to keep a tight lid on acoustics. If you do not play with headphones, you do not have a high end gaming chassis, or your room’s ambient noise level is extremely low this may be the mode for you.
“Uber Mode” – Bios position two. Switch is in position furthest away to where you plug in your displays

I hear something like coil whine although i dont know what it is, i have just saw videos from previous members. But maybe its just something else? The card is working ok. How do i know if its coil whine?

The reason why your card is quiet & cooler then the reviews is because you have vsync enabled so the power of your R290 is not being fully used...;)
