water vs deicer

Really? Never goes above half way? The engine must always be on choke, not good for fuel economy. Even my pathetic 1.1 fiat engine can just about maintain its temperature in the cold with the heater on full and fan on min setting. Though saying that Diesel engines dont seem to produce as much heat afaik.

To the best of my knowledge it is a common issue with common rail diesels.
In cold weather in gentle driving it reaches midway then slowly tails off if sat for a minute. There is nothing wrong with the car, just the way it is designed. This was confirmed when I found out about the mk2.5 electric heater for the cabin as even Ford were unable to fix the issue properly. Drive normally and it reaches temperature fine in the cold....still takes a while to get there but it does - The issue never reaching temp is for the tight git driving a few days before payday :p.

What difference would that make if the thermostat dosnt open anyway?

If anything it could cause more issues than it solves if the thermostat did open and then the engine couldnt cool itself.

The poster quite clearly stated that the thermostat works fine.

Putting a piece of cardboard in there will help keep a bit more heat in the engine bay and warm the engine up quicker.

In cold weather we actually use cardboard on a few of the tractors to keep them from getting too cold :D

It will run hotter. Ie at the correct temperature.

The cooling system is obviously flawed in design for it to never warm up. Obviously don't block the whole rad, just a bit of it will help keep temps up and be better for the engine and wallet.

Yes but what I was getting at was whats the point of blocking the rad if the thermostat doesnt open due to not reaching the required temperature, sorry for the confusion :)
