Panasonic ST Plasmas

Well in the end I just couldn't resist and upgraded my order to the 50ST60 rather than the 42 inch. Only had it for a couple of days now so not run in yet but already it looks brilliant.

So the GT50 doesnt have any major input lag, no?

i think in gaming mode it is 30ms, outside of gaming mode around 100ms.

anything under 50ms is what you should be aiming for but obviously the lower the better.

30ms is a really good amount of lagg for gaming, it's unnoticeable to me.

if i take it out of gaming mode i don't know for sure the exact number of ms it is but im sure the avforums review will have it in there, but it's definitely noticeable. i mean it's as if the screen is trying to keep up with you, when you press a button it does the action on screen after, instead of instantly, in gaming mode it happens instantly.

the ST60 has much higher lagg on purpose because in fact the ST50 has lower lagg than the GT50 even though its a lower model. so panasonic increased inputt lagg on the ST60 to make sure more people bought the higher end models this time round.

I notice 30ms quite easily in fps. The older Panny plasmas were 16 - 24ish if I remember correctly.

PZ85B:
Input lag (rel. to Samsung F96) 30ms faster with IFC off; 15-25ms slower with IFC on
Panasonic TH42PZ85B Plasma HDTV Calibration & Benchmark

PZ80:
Input lag On par with Samsung F96
Panasonic TH42PZ80 / TH42PZ80B Review: 42" Viera Plasma HDTV

Which means that the PZ85B is 30 msec faster than the PZ80, getting it in the range of the 10/20 msec.

PZ85B was 10-20ms
PZ80 was 40-50ms

what tv did you notice input lagg on that was 30ms? if it was a pc monitor, they are usually completely wrong in terms of what the manufacturer states is input lagg and the real world time is much much higher.

I can see a refurbished GT30 for about £450, very very tempted as my original budget was £500! Its a full £250 more for the GT50.. What are the major differences?

the GT50 is far far superior, there were a lot of niggles with the GT30 iirc.

far less issues with panels and a generation newer.

personally i would go St if your not gaming at all, otherwise i would maybe look at samsung plasma's if you are gaming and get something like a E8000 or F5000 or F6000

I recently got a 50" GT60 from Richer Sounds and I can only vouch that its an immense TV. I was also looking at the ST but at the time Richer sounds did not stock them for some reason. I looked at both the GT and ST in the Panasonic shop i could not notice any difference in picture quality at all. The only thing i noticed was the GT had a better brushed metal stand where the ST was painted plastic. I'd be tempted and save yourself £300 and go for the ST.

Thanks, that makes sense. I've now seen the same store has a refurbished ST50 for £550 anyway! I'm now torn between that or £699 for the GT50. Poster above seems to think I won't see much difference :p

Am I silly for looking at (manufacturer) refurbished models..? I really don't want to spend a grand on a TV at this moment in time!

I do in a sense agree. I would always rather buy new, but a 50" looks quite silly in my tiny flat :( I can't seem to find any new 42" plasmas.. anywhere, period!?

PS: The store is Hyperfi, any thoughts on them? I wasn't going to post the name in case they are competitors.

Give it a day or two and it'll look a lot smaller. I thought my 50" ST50 was massive for the room, but its gotten a lot "smaller" after awhile.

they are a local independent retailer no?

personally i would go with john lewis and the 50" on your budget, sure the PQ isn't going to be the same, but it's going to be 50" which is a nice bonus with a 5 year warranty.

you won't find a better retailer than john lewis tbh should anything happen.

personally i would buy this

http://www.johnlewis.com/lg-50ph660v-plasma-full-hd-1080p-3d-smart-tv-50-with-freeview-hd/p467530

and get john lewis to price match elsewhere like richer sounds if they stock it.

5 year warranty and peace of mind.

i wouldn't spend more than £400 on a second hand tv on the off chance it does break, i would also only buy it from the members market or avforums as i know the owner would have looked after it.

I have just recently purchased the lg 50ph660v, 579.99 with 5 yr warrenty thrown in from richer sounds, admittedly i am coming from a very old Samsung 42" plasma but i am very pleased with the set for the money.
Have had it since sunday and have been tweaking it since i hung it on my wall. The image is fantastic and im getting the colors nice and vivid. All in for under £600 id recommend the set.

It took a lot of tweaking to get the blacks at a decent level and i have fiddled with almost every setting on the thing to get it how i want it but im settling on these settings i have now with maybe only tweaking the color a little more.

Oblivion looks stunning, as do other blu rays. I need to pick up a copy of 2009 star trek to run as my old Samsung struggled with the opening space scenes suffering severe banding on the blacks, would be nice to see how this set copes with it.

And yes, unfortunately it doesn't take long for the screen size to settle as the norm.

When I switched from 42" to 50" I thought I had made a huge mistake I saw zero difference in the size of the screen. I think it was due to the difference in bezel sizes making them both look a similar size.

Once I went round to a mates and seen his 42" that's when I realised mine was substantially bigger.

Honestly I didn't think my 50 was any bigger than the 42 I adjusted immediately

The missus will notice immediately for me I'm afraid - if I stand a 50" on my AV unit she'll have to take her Orchids off it - the 42" is already 10cm wider than my trusty TH37PX70 - the 50" would be 25cm wider :(

In the shop the 50" I got didn't look much bigger than the 40" I had but once it was in my room it looked huge - definitely couldn't do anything bigger in terms of screen size/viewing distance - 1080p trailers etc look beautiful but as expected the panel on the VT is like a good audio system in that it's horribly revealing of poor source content.

Yeh, many people don't realise how rubbish SD looks when you get up to 50"-plus screens. I'd love to watch HD source all the time, but it's not always possible.

Having said this, if I had the room I'd buy a larger screen :D
