Teach me vegas

The complimentary drinks whilst gambling are never worth it. The casinos aren't stupid. If you want to drink, go to a bar.

This is totally wrong. The Casinos definitely aren't stupid and a clever casino knows that players are far more likely to make poor decisions and lose more money if they're sloshed. When I was in Vegas, my Friend, my Boss and I were all playing one video blackjack machine, we put maybe twenty dollars into it over the course of three hours.

During that time we were served at least $100 dollars worth of drinks (at the Casino's Bar-prices), because we were "gambling", were polite and most importantly, kept tipping our server.

Lol ignore this.

Buying drinks in Vegas is expensive. Chuck $10 in a machine at the bar and order yourself a double and coke which will cost a $2 tip at most.

You may even win your $10 back....

I guess we're just different. I wake up every single day wishing I was back there. I absolutely love it.

im with you buddy,

one of my favourite places on the planet.

ive been a few times now. i even got married their (at the MGM though not a little chapel thing)

Vegas is whatever you make it. there is something for everyone. LA is a short drive away also if you wanna venture further afield.

Providing 'free' drinks while playing:

It keeps you playing.
It helps you lose.
Most importantly, good service keeps you in THEIR casino.

Just don't order soda water, get something of value. :D

i found the croupiers helped you.

at the end of the day if you are winning you are more likely to tip them. if you're losing you're not going to tip.

I wouldn't want to live there but for the sake of putting on a nice suit, having a lot of drinks, smoking a lot of cigars and gambling away a couple of weeks wages, it's kind of nice.

Go see a show? Restraunts? Bars, clubs, helicopter ride round the strip at night, hookers, red rock canyon, downtown. Go see the stuff going on at each hotel eg shark reef at the Mandalay, bellagio fountains, Zeus at Caesars etc etc.

Sounds like OP wants to get back home and play tabletop warhammer.

Cigar - probably not so much as you cant smoke in the gaming areas or restaurants.

Suits - Unless you are an absolute balla and play high stakes this is not acceptable IMO. The only people that wear suits in Vegas are British tourists who have watched too many films like Oceans 11. Watching a bunch of cockney Herbert’s in suits, who barely know half the rules making minimum bets at the tables is super cringe worthy :D

Gambling a couple of weeks wages away - This bit is completely accurate (if you don’t know what you're doing and/ or unlucky) :p

As for the drinks comment someone made... Getting free drinks whilst playing is extremely good value and very worth it. I probably saved myself about $500 on drinks when I was last over there.

OP - I'm shocked that you can't think of ways of killing time in Vegas....It's one of the easiest places on earth to fill up your time with whatever you so wish.

Loads of great food
Get drunk
Gamble in one of the strip casinos, not the place you are staying in
Play poker
Walk the strip and explore
Go shopping
Gun Range
See a show
Go see the view from the Stratosphere
Go on the various rides in the hotels
The list goes on and on.....

Vegas is amazing, I guess your idea of fun is slippers on and a cup of tea infront of the tv watching eastenders?

OP if you don't like th gambling side of things go and see a show all the Circ du Solei shows are mind blowing and well worth the price, there is also an endless run of gigs going on so there should be something that suits. Finally walk the strip and tick of the tourist must see's like the Bellagio Fountains (when not playing Celine Dion) pop up the Stratosphere for an amazing view and a go on some silly rides (just don't stay in the place any longer than that) take a stroll down fremont street and enjoy the feel of old school vegas.

I'm not on the list of people who love the place, in the grand scheme of things it was just alright but I could easily find enough to keep me interested for a couple of nights without gambling a dime although you've got to chuck 10 dollars on red five!

I really don't see how you can like it, it's just horrible.
I can see why people might like to gamble but there are far better places in the world to do that with way more things to see and do, e.g. South Lake Tahoe - ski all day and then gamble all night., or Monte Carlo , or Switzerland or my local Indian casino on the oregon coast...

Agreed.

If you can't escape it properly how about head to Stratosphere (tall building at the city end of the strip) and go on the rides at the top (if it's still there!). It has a rollercoaster round the edge and a couple of other fun ones.

Otherwise you can listen to some boring patriotic spiel and watch the fountains outside of Bellagio. When I was there they had some patriotic US song (can't remember which) and the fountains went on once every half an hour.

Otherwise, escape the city. Death Valley is "nearby" and it's nice in mid November so now should be fine.

Vegas is pretty much at the bottom of places I would ever want to visit, somewhere behind Iraq, Afghanistam and Syria. I just don't understand the appeal at all.

I appreciate that this doesn't help to answer your questions, the city just makes me angry thinking about it :p

I would far rather vist Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. Vegas is just a regurgitated festering cess pool spilling out on the dessert.

Just been down to get some breakfast and nothing is open at 7am. What kind of hotel doesn't serve breakfast at 7? I got a meeting to get to at 8am

you can smoke most places, main exceptions are places that serve food and poker rooms

Ahh, that'll explain it! I spent most of my time in poker rooms and food places and saw people being told off for smoking. I stand semi corrected :o

Was in LA a few months back, if there is any other blight on the US that compare with the grime of Vegas it can only be LA tbh!

I only have a couple of evenings now and then a week of evenings at CES. Just looking for hints and tips how not to get ripped off at casino bars and anything remotely interesting to do in the evenings.

No, my idea of fun is hurtling down 40* degree slopes in 3ft of fresh powder, climbing the highest mountains in the US, kayacking, backcountry hiking and wilderness survival, rock climbing, MTBing, photographing moose and grizzly bears, diving in Maui, surfing, sky diving, skid touring, or just plain exploring beautiful scenery and places of historic and cultural significance.
