LG G2 or Nexus 5?

uhm, nope.

the only reason to choose N5 over G2 is pure Android. if OP plans to use custom ROMs anyway, there is absolutely NO reason to pick N5 over G2. It's a worse phone, with better software support from Google.

I don't think you can simplify it like that. The quality of ROMs and how many bugs they have with various handsets is important. The g2 is not supported particularly heavily (the xda scene is fairly quiet) and you run the risk of having a phone that never gets a bug free alternative ROM.

A compelling reason to choose a nexus device in the first place is to get default ROM free of bloat that removes the necessity, for many, of installing 3rd party ROMs.

The G2 is an attractive option as it ships until you scrutinise it. There is no recent apps on screen key and the update schedule is months behind the other major manufacturers (the optimus g, last year's flagship is still on 4.2!).

I think it is fair to say that the g2 has the better hardware but assuming that you can ROM your way to a good phone is not a solid decision. Neither is trusting LG to provide timely updates.

N5 or Note 3 for £70 extra!

spot on,

id get the g2 no doubt,

the phone is nearly ideal, the n5 lacks a lot for my personal circumstances

I've made up my mind which one to buy, neither as I've just 'accidentally' bought a cyclocross bike instead, lol!

Yep you might if your lucky get 6 months software support!

Tbh after my Samsung galaxy nexus (for which every update made it slower) I often keep the original software

I'm using version 4.2 or something now and happier than what Icame from

I had a galaxy nexus. Every update improved it for me. Always worth doing a clean install after a major update.

For me I want to be using the latest software. Cerntally would not want a phone on 4.2 after using 4.3 and 4.4,

dont think i am missing anything i can think of off hand?

i really only use my phone for text/web/music

music is handled by power amp
text by handcent
web by firefox and am trying boat
all apps update
im not sure what i am missing from updates?

i dont tend to mess with anything once i have set it all up

battery life is most important to me, and this i found usually suffered as time went on the g2 (like my phone) has an amazing battery capacity
