Considering how expensive it is to make stuff over there, it was only a matter of time.

Staff costs alone are insane.

No it's not, the Pontiac G8 was a rebadged Commodore on which the VXR8 was also based but GM has stopped producing Pontiac.

Bugger.

The Chevrolet SS is also a rebadged Commodore is what I think you meant to say. :) Nothing to do with Pontiac anymore.

I stand corrected, I hadn't even noticed there was now an actual model called the SS, SS was always a variant of existing models in the recent past.

The new SS looks very much like a rebadged Pontiac G8, no suprised for why given it's just a facelift version of the same car I guess :p

It’s a sad day for Australia, the latest generation Commodore is a huge improvement over anything that they’ve produced in the past and they finally have something that will compete with the European cars. The problem with Holden’s main production car, the Commodore, is that while it's iconic it doesn’t exactly have the best image. The general motoring public would be outraged if it was offered with a 4 cyl engine which is the only way to compete with the Accord/Camry that sells in such huge numbers now. To further seal its fate, there is (for now) a fair bit of money to throw around over here, so in the event that fuel costs/running costs aren't an issue, people buy premium German brands. Their focus sized effort, the Cruze, is a bit crap too which doesn't help.

The main issue is that they're too late to the party, they've been building cars based on old technology with far too high fuel consumption when the price of gas here is damn expensive. It's ironic really, all the Holden heads over here seem to think that it's cool to bit a Chev badge on their cars when it's them/GM that are ultimately shelving the brand.

All the cops here drive Holden as well - I wonder what they'll change over to...

There's a whole redkneck community crying into their wheaties... with beer...

BMW just took the government's protected vehicles contract so I wouldn't be surprised to see them in line to provide vehicles for the police too.

I'd be surprised. The massive service and purchase costs of BMW would put a stop to it.

I'd expect them to continue with Ford, Toyota and Holden offerings.

I did say "in line", I didn't say they'd necessarily get the contracts. That they were able to come in significantly cheaper (and offer a better product) than Holden in the aforementioned government contract does say a lot though.
