We seem to have succeeded in producing an awful lot of people who are quite funny on a panel show, but very few good stand-up comedians. Ross Noble's stand-up is exceptional, but he's a pain on panel shows so is a bit of an anomaly.
But Jimmy Carr, Jack Whitehall, Milton Jones, Jon Richardson, Lee Mack, David Mitchell, Micky Flanagan are all good value on panel shows, but when they need to hold an audience for an hour they're atrocious.
The best stand up I've seen for a long, long time is Simon Amstell's Numb. He's nothing like he was on Buzzcocks, and it's stunningly good.
