Steam os released today in USA

Well, I'ma leave it alone now.
Can someone who has it working on an Nvidia card try to play games from their Steam library (Like normal conventional games, say Batman Akrham Origins) does it play straight off from Steam? I don't think it will, what with the whole not having DirectX.

You can only play games that have the little Linux penguin next to them.

I've got Steam on the desktop working.

And what a surprise, my games that actually work on linux is tiny and pretty much consists of Indie games.

This will become a viable gaming OS however exactly? The only way it has merit is if the streaming stuff is good, but that means it's alongside an actual gaming computer.

You would have to stream that

That's my point exactly, this can't be a viable gaming OS as your games just aren't going to work.

Which is the problem.

Yeah exactly, you are better of getting a long HDMI cable from your PC to your TV then you can play everything on your PC. Even those games that are not on Steam for big picture mode. I even setup a wireless mouse/keyboard in the lounge so I can play pad games and normal PC games. SO I already have every PC game in my lounge :)

Besides the streaming I'm pretty sure the idea is if this actually gains traction then developers will not only make their future games compatible but could also possibly patch older games.

I really wouldn't even begin to make your mind up on this project for at least 1-2 years to see how the OS develops and how developers respond to it. Remembering when Steam came out who could have predicted it becoming the absolute core of PC gaming - it was just some crappy thing you were forced to use to play Counterstrike on that went down daily because of 5MB patches overloading the servers.

I just don't understand where the "We can get away from Windows" stuff has came from.

Where's Glacus with his magic DirectX wrapper?

Not sure not been following it much, but did they not say they have a load of future games that developers will get working on Steam OS, although does not help the older games much. But by the time it is out of Beta/Alpha I am sure they have the idea of getting all future PC games working on Linux. I dunno though.

Future releases may be more likely to run, if they get away from DirectX (Say Mantle for Thief for example)

But still, what good's a gaming OS that you can't actually game on right now?

I just don't see a mass migration for the older games.

I've been pessimistic from the announcement, and at initial release, it doesn't fill me with confidence, this is no different than trying to game off Linux now, except it's not under a guise of a gaming OS.

Exactly, you may as well just install your own choice of Distro and install the linux Steam client you will be in exactly the same spot as you are now with Steam OS. Still I am interested to see where it goes in the next few years.

I don't really see what's entirely wrong now to be honest.

So gaming should stay the way it is now forever? no room for improvement or visionary ideas to potentially revolutionize it?

Forums were filled with people sounding exactly like you are now when Steam was first released - pessimism is fine, but you really have to let these things play out and in particular to platforms like Steam or now the Steam OS, you have to wait years to truly be able to gauge it's success and impact.

I don't understand how the SteamOS is going to change anything?
Mantle if it kicks off will move away from DirectX, we can all rally behind Mantle, that brings gaming to the masses.

Yeah I'm not certain how many people will want a gaming OS that can't play all their games (BF4 :) ). That and the number of people with computers sat down stairs to stream to are a tiny minority.

Also as for steam been the core of pc gaming, good grief their prices are ridiculous I don't get the fanboy mentality that some people have.

Mantle available across the board would be much more interesting.
