If humans didn't ever sleep.....

This thread is basically asking "If we had more time to do things that take time, would those things be finished sooner?"

Greatest thread ever. and I am being one hundred percent serious.

Which means you've missed the point because he asked if we'd be twice as advanced because of it.
If I had 4 hours extra awake time I'd just watch TV or something but I certainly wouldn't be working unless we hypothetically have laws to say that we have to work that extra time and we have to put full concentration into it.

My own guess is likely to be between 8-10. with possible seasonal variations (More in winter, less in summer) This is rather more than many people currently survive on. I suspect that most people are chronically sleep deprived. Some researchers currently claim that people who sleep long hours are more prone to ill health. But this (To my mind) is a bit like the Grass/Schizophrenia argument. IE people who consistently "Need" 10 hours a night despite the modern pressures of life, are probably already ill! The longer than "Normal" sleeping is a symptom rather than a cause.

The optimal amount for most (adult) people seems to be 5 cycles or approx 7 hours and 30-45 minutes. 4 hours or less per night seems to have a high chance of leading to dementia developing later in life (though could also be linked to the lifestyle of people who tend to sleep those kind of hours).

That Russian sleep experiment is just grim. I don't believe it but eugh some creepy ****

Theres too much specific information given about certain parts of it i.e. the nature of the injuries inflicted on the people removing the subjects that make me think its mostly or entirely a work of fiction.
