MSI has showcased its new products for winter.

An exclusive event took place in Japan, where MSI showcased some new cards, including GTX 780 Ti and Radeon R9 290X, both custom built. I’m not sure why these cards are not simply called GAMING, as we used to know red painted cards from MSI, but Twin Frozr 4S OC. I guess this is just a branding for Asian market. Plus, they still have G-series logo.

According to Hermitage Akihabara only few samples of these cards exists (that would be about R9 290X). Card is not yet available for the masses, and it is scheduled for early January or late December.

They (Powercolor have done it as well already) are putting backplates on Hawaii cards because it has been proven to be particularly effective with them.

Thats good, hopefully itl start a standard with custom flagship cards. Currently have an EK backplate, dont know how effective it is because the card is under water, but it came with thermal pads and such to let all the hotter parts have contact. Card is currently mining and the backplate is a fair bit toastier than the water/tubing according to my fan controller temp sensors, so it must be doing something!

I don't suppose OCUK knew this (R9 290 as well??) was coming and ordered stock already...?
That's what these forums are for, the enthusiasts do all the hard work. :p

I dont think we have temp figures just yet but if other aftermarket coolers are anything to go by and if you can trust techspot results then i have seen this posted around:

Update: Based on your feedback,
I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on
our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress
test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees
in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4. So it seems as expected the board
partners will be able to solve the heat issues of the reference card.

Not the same cooler but maybe comparing 280x coolers with each other will give you an indication where the coolers stand. I would imagine that the board partners would optimize the cooler for 290x though, but if his results are true, the temps are not all that bad and could well be better for the actual 290 versions!

Hopefully i can pick up another waterblock or two when the coolers go live.

:p

You know I'll be ordering one of these on launch, or the Windforce. Still pondering between the Twin Frozr and Windforce.

Having used the Twin Frozr cooler on a 680 Lightnings, I was very impressed and not loud in any way, shape or form and from reading others comments, the same can be said about the WF cooler (seems a couple have bearing problems on the fans).

Both the twin frozr and wf coolers are excellent. Got a twin frozr 650 here and have owned 5 different wf cooled cards. Not really much to choose between them tbh.

I had a Winforce (670 I think) and had no issues. Nice and quiet. Guess it will come down to the price as there doesn't seem to be much to choose between MSI and Gigabyte. Both excellent brands.

Indeed price will be a deciding factor. As well as excellent cooling solutions. Both manufacturers have very reputable support services.
