New Graphics card! Advice appreciated thanks

Hi guys, my 6870 decided to melt itself last night so I'm in the market for something new now. my spec is quite out dated so I plan to get a GPU now and then swap my cpu,mobo and ram later, everything else is pretty good (case/psu etc)

what would you recommend me at the minute? Apologies for making another one of these generic threads, though I have not kept up with computer hardware in 2 years now so your opinion is significant in comparison to mine.

Thoughts? noticably better than my 6870? and will still be worthwhile with a phenom II 940 lol (will be upgrading that in the near future for sure)

If you're looking at the 270 might as well add a bit more and look into purchasing the 270X or GTX760

Saw the 7850 around the £100 mark if you want to save a bit but that was for the 1GB version

thanks a lot for your replies guys. Just back from the bank and turns out I have £450 more than I thought i had lol good times. Though that isnt the budget for my card

@LtMatt, I only play on 1440 x 900 because my samsung monitor decided to blow up last month lol, i do plan to update my monitor too eventually back to the usual 1920x1080 or so.

The only game I play and probably will play for the foreseeable future is league of legends (not really high requirements but I like to have a good machine regardless).

I plan to get an i7 4770K sometime after christmas and I dont plan on overclocking simply because i am clueless to it generally and I don't really need the extra performance, in reality I don't notice it.

maybe upto £200 for the card or so, tho i'm not strict on it, I like to get the best value for performance even if it means spending a little bit more.

I'd go for the 'Sapphire Radeon R9 270X Toxic OC 2048MB' with your budget. Very fancy and nice looking card and an excellent quiet cooler to boot. It competes with much faster cards at a fraction of the price. Its a bit of an overkill for League Of Legends, but you can never have too much performance right? If you're gonna get a 4700k you may as well have a decent gpu to go with it.

Aye thats a solid card as well. Had one of those coolers myself. It comes with some nice free extras (BF4+Toolkit) as well which i didn't realise.

can I ask, what you would do with the 6870 in this instance? give it to someone who may attempt fixing it etc or just dump it in the bin?

well, I was about to order and I thought, lets wack the 6870 in the oven to see if I can have any luck on that front, turns out it worked. my card is working perfectly again, been craving to play some LoL.

works for now atleast, guess I'll just buy a full build shortly after christmas, thanks anyway for the help guys appreciate it.
