Any upgrade suggestions would be welcome - £1000 or less budget

Hi all, I've been lurking around here for the last few days checking out the various upgrade and spec suggestion threads to get a better understanding of what upgrades I want to get for my computer. However, I'd love any input or suggestions before I take the leap. My apologies if I get any hardware names/numbers wrong.
-------------------------------------------------------
My current computer is thus:

Motherboard: ASUS P7P55D
Processor: Intel i5 750 @ 2.66 MHz (stock cooler)
RAM: 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Elite DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD5850 1GB
HDD: 1GB SATA and 256 GB SSD
Power Supply: TX 750W Corsair (not modular)
Case: Antec 300
Monitor: Dell SP2309W 23" widescreen
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional Upgrade edition
-------------------------------------------------------

I'd like to turn this into a mid-high end gaming rig if possible - one that's capable of 1080p 60fps on the majority of current titles and stays quiet. I'm happy with my hard drives and OS but everything else is fair game to be upgraded. As tempting as the R9 290 is I'm very wary of its temperature and noise issues, but otherwise don't mind too much AMD or Nvidia wise.

My absolute maximum budget is £1000 including a new monitor (got my eyes on the BenQ XL2411T). However, if someone had the time to spec me a £500ish upgrade without a monitor too I'd be really grateful (as I really shouldn't be spending £1000!).

Thanks much for any help and advice!

You could try buying the 290 that reaper suggested and OC you i5 750 to around 4ghz and see how it does. If it feels slow then you can upgrade the rest of the spec.
