** UNLEASH THE KRAKEN **

As I said in the other thread on this...

Arctic Accelero Hybrid

Water pump + radiator combo
1x 120mm fan
Shroud with integrated fan
VRM and VRAM heat sinks + thermal glue

Total - £75 as everything is in one single convenient box

Or

NZXT Kraken Bracket - £30
Compatible water cooling kit - £53
VRM and VRAM heat sink + thermal glue kit - £12

Total - £95

It's no contest to be honest... The Hybrid is cheaper, looks better, is more compact and provides better VRM and VRAM cooling.

Most people will have a compatible cooler

Isn't this just a ripoff of the dwood bracket?

Yup, NZXT and Arctic both took ideas from the community then stamped their name on it and added a premium, capitalism eh :P

The difference being though your not limited to the stock Accelero fan with the NZXT option plus you can choose your AIO unit, I'm not sure how the Accelero option provides better VRM/VRAM cooling as it has less airflow? Aesthetics are personal preference, I think the NZXT looks quite professional next to the cheap/tacky aesthetics of the Accelero. And at the end of the day if people don't buy it the price will drop, just like the formally £175 Accelero did.

more like an improvement oh and you don't have to wait 8 weeks.

Hmm, it's the same thing but prettier and triple the price, not sure if that's really a major improvement.

The air flow from the Hybrid fan is more then enough and even running small heat sinks and a low fan speed will produce better results then just air cooling bare chips.

And in regards to picking your own AIO with the NZXT? People will most likely have the H50 that I linked to, that uses the same pump and radiator as the Hybrid.

is the hybrid more compact?
it looks like they both take up 3 slots to me?
im tempted to run a card like this but not if its more than 2 slots :(

The bracket is available in UK for £10 delivered in a few days. This version is a lot prettier and includes a fan though so if you didn't have spare 120mm fan (but who doesn't?) it's not such a bad deal.

And I think the Hydro looks tacky myself and would rather have this or just the bracket.

Its slightly over 2 slots, the NZXT is well over 2.

My board has 3 spaces between PCIEX slots so its quite easy for me to get a couple of cards with Hybrids in there.

I doubt I would get a couple of cards with the NZXT bracket in the same space.

its more just the shroud that sticks out on them tho?
on both i mean
looks like u could wrap the tubes round so it could fit in 2 slot if it didnt have a silly sticky out shroud

i dont have space for 2.5 slots, just 2.0 hehe

IMHO after taking in price for the bracket and the cooler and the need to purchase heat-sinks (for the VRMs) the Artic Hybrid Cooler is a better choice. While the Hybrid cooler doesn't have enough heat-sinks for the VRAM (4 short) it really doesn't need heat-sinks anyway, but at least it has VRM cooling.

Airflow may be enough to cool the VRMs at stock clocks and volts as soon as you OC and add volts the lack of VRM heat-sinks will cause problems.

did you read this which i posted earlier in the thread ?

Yes, it doesn't dispute what I said. Or am I missing your point sorry? The Kraken looks great and I did consider one for purchase but when I added up the total cost of the bracket, cooler and heatsinks it was going to cost almost £100.

Bracket £30
Cooler £53
Heatsinks £12
Thermal Tape £4

Total £99

Arctic Acellero Hybrid cost £75
Heatsinks £12
Thermal Tape £4

Total £91

I could have easily have saved the £16 for the heatsinks and Thermal Tape.

I have done a red mod for a friends R9 290 and with a 12CM fan over the VRM. Temps were mid 80s at stock voltage acceptable but by no means great but reached ~110c with 100mV added voltage.

Once We added some VRM heat-sinks it dropped the temps by ~18c to low 90s at 100mV.

Testing this setup inspired me to purchase an R9 290, flash it to R9 290X and install an Arctic Hybrid cooler with Alpenphon heatsinks for RAM and VRMs. At 100mV I am getting VRM1 temperatures of 85c-88c which IMHO is excellent. They were higher until I moved the radiator from exhaust hot air to intake cold air and put a side case fan on my PC.

At stock it is high 70s.

The kraken in that review i posted has no heat sinks on the vrms and temps are still good

noise reduction under load is what im after mainly, but the lower temps on both core and vrms looks good, i have pre ordered one so will see and report back at a later date my findings :)

found this on google quite intereting

Those temperatures on the VRMs do look good. For the record my VRM1 temperatures are only 2c cooler than those at stock clocks and voltages. Once I add +100mV the VRM1 temperatures will rise by 15c. It all depends on the game, for example MLL only ever gets to 77c while Tomb Raider gets to 88c

Good luck with the build, I look forward to seeing your findings.

Thanks.
