Just seen an article which I thought may interest some on the bbc website

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-25355758

From mid 2014 a company will no longer be able to make money out of you sitting on hold with some naff music whilst waiting to speak to someone! I for one am glad and think its about time!

Finally perhaps ocuk will go back to a 01 number too ;)

Online retailers will also benefit from the new regulations, which will make it clear that consumers have to return goods before they can get a refund, or else provide proof of postage.

Businesses will also be able to deduct money from refunds, where there is evidence that a returned item has been used.

That sounds like trouble.

Yep, that's going to hurt the consumer. While the return period is going up to 14 days it sounds like the retailer can cage a return fee if it has been used. Most items would be used to check them out. So this looks like it may be the start of the end for DSR as we know it (funny enough I predicted it fairly recently when people were arching that it would never be taken away).

Don't worry now ALL online retailers will use this to rip you off..... if its not shrink wrapped then they will claim its used and claim 20-40% discount.... and even if it is shrink wrapped be prepared for a fight. Watch and learn!

I don't think it will be that bad. There's provision for establishing that something isn't defective:

"If (in the case of a sales contract) the value of the goods is diminished by any amount as a result of handling of the goods by the consumer beyond what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods, the trader may recover that amount from the consumer, up to the contract price."

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure there will be some that try to exploit it. I know of many people however who think nothing of returning goods after they've been used (especially clothing) so it's only fair that reputable retailers get some form of reimbursement.

Always use saynoto0870, along with adding the numbers from that into my phone for places I call regularly. bank, car insurance etc.

I work closely with Telephony teams, and non-geographic numbers do play an important functional role beyond revenue share (saynoto0870 can make things very difficult sometimes!).

And even then, the revenue share is used to offset costs. Take that away, and prices will need to rise elsewhere to compensate. Nature of the beast sadly. You can always get around it by calling from your work phone instead. :p
