Best Card For 720p Gaming?

:p

Having a fairly new CRT (as in received new, not just released!) that's at 1600 x 1200 I usually just run games in 1280 x 720 as the 4:3 aspect isn't suited to all games. I'm after a card that'll let me play games this year and next at reasonably decent levels, high would be cool, doesn't have to be ultra.

I was hoping that due to my relatively low res requirements I might get away with it under £200, so can you guys narrow me down something that'll take care of business without breaking the bank. :)

Appreciated.

Even a 7790 should be good enough for this rez. If you fancy something newer an r9 270x would breeze through this resolution

GTX 670 or GTX 760, both probably overkill but incredibly capable cards. Will manage 1080p should you grab a new monitor.

Don't have a clue about the new AMD cards.

720p isn't too demanding at all nowadays. I have a 7850 and it runs most things nicely at 1920x1200 so I imagine a 7790 or a 7850 would be sufficient for games at 720p or 1600x1200. There is no need to go beyond an R9 270X at £150-£160 for this resolution.

7850 would be overkill tbh, my girl uses a 5800K IGPU for light gaming @ 720p. Any dedicted GPU from HD 7750 up would be fine, maybe a used GPU for an even cheaper option..

i say 270x. that will serve you well at 1080p if you eventually upgrade. no point in getting cards like used 7790.

270x comes with full warranty and games that once you sell will bring the actual cost to around 100 quid level.

I'm in the process of testing one for a relative, it's a gigabyte 270x oc.

Fantastic little card, quiet enough if you ramp the fans up, quite a small card with brilliant cooling ( few hrs of bf4 with the temps not exceeding 62c. great overclocking too, especially on the core, got it at 1100 from 947 and not touched voltages.

Bf4 full ultra including x4msaa averages around 55-60fps.

This one I guess then?

great cooler, free bf4, + silver couplon = more games for free and a free item

The Gigabyte one also comes with bf4 and silver coupon so has the same 3 free games. The Gigabyte has a better cooler IMO but if the op has a case with under average airflow the HIS may be better as it'll get rid of air out of the back. I suspect the 3 fans on the Gigabyte will be able to spin lower to keep a similar or lower temp than the HIS. So quieter and cooler. Extra year warranty with the Gigabyte as well.

I think the Windforce works particularly well with the mid range cards as the lower power used allows the fans to run a low rpm most of the time unlike a 280X.
