Hi all,

Whats the current view on the stock coolers that come with the i7 Haswell CPU's these days?
I'll be building a new system soon & need to look into cooling options.

The last CPU/cooler combo I had was an E8400 with 120mm Themaltake cooler, which was a beast but it did the job :D

Whats the air cooler of choice these days?

The Phanteks as mentioned. And other good alternatives are the noctua nh d14 and the alpenfohn k2 mount doom. All of theese are quite large and may block ram slots so low profile ram helps. They may obstruct some expansion slots too depending on motherboard. Personally im not that keen on the AIO liquid systems. But they do take up less space but can cost more.

Ive got a silver arrow SB-e SE and its doing a good job on my 4670k at 4.5ghz

Liking the look of the Phanteks, certianly looks like it's up to the job!

Thanks for the suggestions, just got to decide on a colour scheme now. ;)

What no-one seemed to mention (which is massively important) is the case/ RAM choice.

The Phanteks is 170mm tall so you'll need to find a case to accept it..

Also, you can't use high profile RAM with it, as the heatsink (the metal bit) overhangs the RAM slots on the motherboard..

Stock coolers are rancid. We dont do owt stock around this gaff!!!

I personally like Megahelms Cooler myself as it looks good, works well and you can use any type of RAM with it.

I think it should be ok as long as the ram is in slots 2 + 4, using 1 + 3 might result in the fins of the ram touching the fan on the cooler. Though maybe 8 Pack or someone can confirm this. A second fan on the rear for push/pull will fit grand though.
