Is 1050watt enough for 3x r9 290's and xeon 1660?

As title asks.
Extra hardware H100 pump, an ssd, 5x 120mm corsair fans. No other hardware.
I found a couple of online calculators but they don't have the 290 listed as graphics card, only 290x. I believe there is a 20 - 30watt difference isn't there?

Not if you're going to OC and I think that you'd be running pretty close to max in load.

A colleague of mine on a danish hardware review site tested out 3x R290@X on a oc'ed ci7 4960x 4.8Ghz and needed an enermax 1500w psu before the system would run stable when benchmarking. The system pulled around 1100watt out of the wall socket.
 
If OCing no.

If stock then maybe if it's a premium unit that can run with higher than rated draw.

Our own 8pack has said the SuperFlower 1200W Leadex's that OcUK carry can power 3 290Xs.

GPU's will run at 100% load, cpu idle.
PSU is a Corsair HX1050 Silver rated

By my math, each gpu is 275Watt, cpu 10 - 130watt. That's 955watt max, plus motherboard, plus pump, plus ssd. 100watt for pump board and ssd? Just wanting to check with others before going ahead.

That Corsair unit could struggle. :(

The Superflower 1000W Platinum can do it with ease, even with CPU and cards overclocked, but it is Platinum rated.

You will simply have to try it and see, if you get stability issues, remove a card, if your then stable, swap cards, if still stable, then your PSU is struggling and time to upgrade it.
 
Ok Gibbo, time to order another R9 290 then :-)

Doing some reading the ssd uses 0.16watt, the h100 uses 30 - 60watt with fans attached? Not official, that's from corsairs forums.

You can only try it and see, like I say if your system becomes unstable, you know it is PSU.
 
Three of my 290Xs plus 3970X overclocked had no problem bringing my 1200i Corsair PSU to it's knees and the cards were not even running flat out.:eek:

That's because that Corsair unit as 8 Pack would say is junk. ;)

When 8 Pack tested the Superflower 1200W he was frankly amazed, as he made the very comment that the Corsair 1200W could not run 3 cards overclocked.

Yes the Superflower managed to run 4 cards all overclocked! Goes to show the quality difference. :)

I am just about to do a build with two Corsair 1200W PSUs and if they are not up to it I will be looking to get a couple of Superflower PSUs.

Are you using it for mining? If so don't cheap out on the PSU. Just not worth the risk.
 
Am using it for mining yes. Sadly the psu is only a month old. I did not buy it with mining in mind. But I bought 2 290's myself and was "given" a 3rd towards mining. Technically this corsair only needs to last until a 4th 290 is purchased. Then i'll need to look at a monster psu
 
How old is the PSU? Remember that capacitor aging means the output power drops over a psu's lifetime. I'd be very wary of pushing a PSU right to its limit. If it blows it has the potential to take out all of your components. If you're already planning on getting a higher wattage PSU then get it now and don't take the risk.

I upgraded my 2 week old 1000w EVGA Platinum psu (which is superflower leadex platform underneath) and whilst it probably could have handled my system I didn't want to risk it.
 
PSU is less than 4 weeks old. Planning to upgrade the psu is 1 thing, having the funds to do it this side of Christmas is another. GPU max draw should be 825watt. No clocking, default speeds. 225watts not enough for the rest of the machine on idle?

They should have the 280X listed so use that (mining all out is less power intensive than gaming all out as it's only stressing the GPU itself not the rest of the card and the power consumption difference between the 280X-290 will actually reflect that quite well.

Also remember that while your cards are mining your CPU/RAM/etc are basically idle (unless your doing other stuff at the same time ofc).

Yup mining is one of the only areas where it literally pays to use the best PSU. I.E if you consume 1000w 24/7 then you would save ~£100 a year by running a Gold/Platinum PSU over a Bronze one.

It's your choice and whilst I doubt it will blow up there is always a risk when pushing a PSU close to capacity.

My second rig took out a 6 month old Corsair HX650w which should have easily managed crossfire 280x mining (max tdp 250w) and a sempron (max tdp 40w and all stored in a crate, no additional fans and 1 Hard drive). Very lucky that nothing was damaged but I learnt my lesson.
 
Plan over the next couple of months will be to put a larger psu in this rig with a 4th 290. Maybe a 1200w plat grade? Then in a second rig move this 1050watt psu to it and add 2 290's. But we'll see. 3rd card going in later today. I'll update this thread if everything goes bang or not :-)
