Diaspora Social Network

Sounds like a diarrhoea remedy.

Also it's a bit pointless and futile trying to run a decentralized network when the internet and the world itself is becoming more and more centralized.

There is no reason why a social network has to be physically centralised, just so long as the data is accessible anywhere.
Torrents are not centralised, they work fine.

Seriously, this could be really good, Facebook's control of people's personal information is a significant loss of privacy so I hope this works out for these guys.

I know its 2010, but looks to be fairly well established now. You go to this site, http://podupti.me/ pick a pod and sign up to the pod and that signs you up to the network. Anyone can create a pod but you realy need a server and tech knowledge for that, but its optional. You can just use the web based interface to use the network.

i signed up at https://socializer.cc to check it out.

The difficulty for Diaspora will getting people to use it over Facebook. Google+ works well, and has better mobile apps than Facebook, but is generally considered a failure because most people use Facebook instead.

People have been able to host their own Diaspora seeds for a while now. There was a lot of noise about it a few years back, but it kind of fizzled out and one of the lead devs died. It'll never get the traction certain people thought it would.
