Hi guys,

I'm finally ready to part with my BMW 330i, and have got quite interested in the Jaguar XF.

I've been thinking about getting the 3.0 diesel, and most likely in the R-Sport trim.

I really like the looks of the car, inside and out, and have had a couple of test drives.

Anyone have any views or anything to watch out for. Would be likely getting new from dealer, or nearly new if I can find one I like! I wanted the cold climate pack, mirror pack and keyless entry system.

Cheers,

Mal

The XF is a wonderful car but is it worth buying a new or nearly new one at this stage, it must be end of life soon, it's been around for almost 6 years. It's competition is now all newer and more modern. If you still fancy the XF save a packet and buy a slightly older one?

You can buy a low mileage facelift car for just over £20k with the 3.0d in it..

Or perhaps a Premium Luxury from a main dealer..

Seems bonkers to plough new-car money into one now when they've been out so long and as a result the used market is so well stocked...

Fantastic cars but I completely agree with Fox. They represent a fantastic buy <£25k, but are not worth throwing new/nearly new money on at this stage.

I almost bought an XF but went for the A6 due to a combination of reduced running costs (MPG and overall reliability) and that the A6 feels like a lot newer car (launched 2 years ago v 6 years).

If you are adament you want to spend £30k+ I would be looking at the A7/A6, 5 series or as a slight curve ball the XJ.

The R-Sport is a marketing ploy to stick the body kit from the DS onto the lower powered cars. If you can get a 3.0 DS instead, preferably with the PL spec or Portfolio and revering camera, the 3.0DS has more power but returns almost identical economy to the 3.0D as its almost the same engine just in a different state of tune.

You want a MY12.5 or newer car as they skimped on the spec of the MY12 making things like split folding seats and heated screen optional, that they then put back in on the MY12.5 onwards. Dont buy one without warranty as the bills are scary that it can throw.

The MY12 cars are thousands and thousands of pounds cheaper to buy though, so if the difference really is split folding seats and a heated screen then it doesnt sound like a big deal...

Must be looking at different cars as there isn't 1000's difference, there are only a hand full of MY12 cars about and you can't tell by looking at them, at least not on the internet, unless you can get a clear shot of the centre console. There are other thing s like USB, DAB as well that are added.

I can only see 2 approved 3.0DS PL or Portfolios at all under 25K...and its not like theres an abundance of 3.0D PL or Portfolios either. Of the half dozen or so 2 or 3 have had the missing spec put back so their ok.

Terribly useless contribution, but I can't believe the XF has now been out that long, shocked really! Still a great looking car.

Any idea when the next gen XF is due out? I've seen rumours of 2015 but obviously nothing solid so it would seem at least another year away. I've been debating whether to trade mine in for a facelift in the next few months.

Press seem to think it'll be around the 2015 mark, from most auto news sites, they appear to imply the baby saloon will be out before that (though they'll both be on the same new Aluminium platform).

I would suggest you add reversing camera in. My 2 neighbours with XF's both said it was a must and, whilst not quite the same, I wouldn't be without it on the XJ.

Personally I would not be basing a choice on what it may be replaced with 2 years away.

Yep camera is a must as its a complete git to park otherwise, the option also adds front sensors as well.

I bought my XF a few weeks ago, and love it.

You might as well go for the higher output diesel engine as the economy is the same and the extra performance is nice to have, and the reverse parking camera is also definitely worth having.

As others have said, the R-Sport is just a pimped version in many ways - aim for a 3.0D S in PL or Portfolio spec, would be my recommendation. In all honesty, I can see me replacing my MY11 with a facelift XF when the time to change comes along - simply fabulous cars :)
Oh, and the camera is a 'must'...

The facelift helped a lot, the previous front end looks a bit naff now.

I actually prefer the front end of the pre-facelift. The lights on facelift ones are horrible, the J LEDs just look bizarre.

I have a 2010 3.0D, a couple of things I'd say to watch out for, although by no means are major problems, when test driving, listen out for a buzzing in either of the doors, their is a known fault with the wiring looms that cause them to split and vibrate against the door card. It's a very annoying sound, hard to miss.

Also, listen for the tank slapping issue. Accelerating or braking, you might hear a knocking sound coming from the fuel tank. Again, it's a known fault for Jaguar, and both problems they'd fix for free regardless of warranty. This was an issue up until the MY13 cars as far as I know, and reading about it on certain XF forums

Amazing cars though, I've had so many problems with mine, but that's more due to some bad luck. They've all been sorted now though and I'm back to loving the car and being able to enjoy it properly again

I much prefer the front end on the facelift, its much more aggressive in the S version. I like the J LEDs and as they give it a nice modern look, the rear lights are nicer as well.
