She had been with an accountancy firm just over 6 weeks they were desperate in November and today they called her to a meeting and told her that the new manager didn't approve of her (no reason as to what) and because she had a 6 month probation period today was her last day.

She worked really hard to help them get all their end of year stuff done often working over time without any additional pay.

We live together and now have to be very careful with spending over Christmas and new years. Our rent is due on Monday.....

:(

Sounds like a horrible experience and I dont want to sound cold but she wasn't really fired? Good luck to getting something sorted matey.

Probably needed somebody to help out with year end but not the rest of the year. Terrible thing to happen this time of year, just hope she didn't leave a comfortable job for this one!

Also, if she's good looking, i'll pay her for some "work" over this Christmas period.

Nice to see the OCUK Christmas spirit is strong here. One guy gets a ton of money and equipment donated, and you want to donate your equipment so you can then give her some money.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Sorry to read that, matey. If it is any consolation to you both, I think it is much better to find out what an awful company it is sooner rather than later. If a company treats its workers like that then she's better off finding alternative employment before invests too much of her life n it. Good luck with the hunt, hope your Christmas plans go well in the end.

I'd take that to court tbh - pretty sure they can't pull a stunt like that without proving she was underperforming or causing difficulties for the firm. Name and shame the gits

As per the post above - until you've worked for a company for about a year you have very few rights and even less when they take you on with a specific probationary period of less than a year which is quite usual these days. Conversely its quite hard to get rid of someone after they've been there 2 years unless they do something that qualifies as gross misconduct.

It's recently changed to 2 years for some unknown reason before an employee gets any rights. God knows why though! Like an employer wouldn't know if their employee was suitable after a year.

I feel for you. I lost my old job a couple of weeks ago. I brought it on myself by letting some personal issues affect my work, but I honestly think I could have pulled it around if they'd given me a second chance.

I was lucky enough to get another job though, right off my first job interview. Hopefully your girlfriend will have the same luck as me.

You still get some rights after a year (EDIT: Atleast going by my handbook for work anyway) - its mostly the stuff like constructive dismissal thats been moved to 2 years.
