Evening guys,

I bought the http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FS-364-OE&groupid=43&catid=2475&subcat=2602 a few months back but with the 7950 gpu.

All has been well up until a few weeks back.

I've had a few random crashes on Arma2 OA with the ACE mod enabled which I put down to the mod package and server load etc. Tonight I tried playing Battlefield 3 and some of my other "standard" games. I've had nothing but problems all night..

Screen freezes and then I have to do a hard reset to get back into windows. Any ideas as to the cause?

Cheers,

Brad

I've just had a look at the error logs, it doesn't make much sense to me! I'll cut and paste some of the things I think are relevant below;

This is from the "Administrative events" section.

It's very strange, sometimes I can play for a good few hours with no problems at all and other times it will hang-up five times in the space of an hour.

I can see a lot "Display" warnings in there. Could be a case of the display driver crashing and Windows not being able to recover leading to hard locks ? usually shows up as Kernel 41 type 63 error messages as the system could not shut down properly.

I think this is usually linked to power states / maybe PSU not giving enough juice to the GPU, at least that is what i read when I was looking for resolutions to the errors I was getting which were pretty much the same as what you experience. I never really got to the bottom of mine so gave up. The issue is intermittent and I still get the occasional hard lock.

As part of trouble shooting I tried the following:

1. Check all power connectors are fully engaged
2. Updated bios to latest version
3. Updated firmware on SSD to rule out the 5400 hour bug
4. Updated catalyst to latest release
5. Mem test on all RAM and booted using a single stick, included trying single stick in every slot
6. Disabled crossfire and physically pulled one of the cards to only run with a single
7. Tried 2 different PSU (different manufacturers)
8. Defrag OS SSD
9. Ran all spyware/malware sweep to make sure I wasn't infected

Only thing i didn't do was a complete fresh re-install of the OS because simply I lost the will to live and simply couldn't be bothered as I know I am doing a full platform upgrade next year.

FYI my rig is

MSI P67 GD65
2500K @ 4.8
16GB corsair vengence RAM 1600
7950 crossfire
Samsung 840 SSD
Corsair TX850 also tried XFX 850 bronze and Seasonic 850 PSU

I'd clone your hard drive, do a clean install of Windows 7 and the latest drivers for hardware. Run something like Heaven Benchmark. If your machine still crashes, get in touch with OCUK.

Right guys, bit of an update.

I had overclocked the GPU and had thouroughly benchtested using Heaven - stable temps, no tearing, inclusions or artifacts. I had been using this configuration for weeks with absolutely no problems including some marathon Arma 3 sessions on Ultra.

Yesterday I used Catalyst and wound the card back to stock, done a full OS recovery and played for three hours without a hitch. Then using Catalyst, I reinstated the overclock to exactly the same values I was previously using. Benched and stressed it for an hour and it's been fine ever since.

I've stressed and CPUz'd the CPU and it's overclock is present and stable @ 4.4 also. It looks to me as though removing the GPU OC and then reinstaiting it has cleared whatever "bug" was present but only time will tell I guess.

Thanks for your help guys :-)

Played approximately 10 hours today and yesterday of Arma 2 ACE mod enabled with max draw distance and settings without a hitch. How strange.....
