Hello i am after a week end car that i can go to car shows and car meets with. (basically have a excuse to get out the house)

I am 20 years old with one years no clams bonus. I have a budget of around £3k (might sell old car to family member so maybe £3.5k-£4k) I will have around £1k for insurance.

requirements

must be able to modify if wanted (tastefully)

reasonable size boot or back seats for luggage

sadly due to heath problems it makes it very hard to get out the house and meet other people my age (cant drink and cant do most sports) so a weekend car will hopefully get to socialize with other people my age.(in the real world :D)

Your budget is not very big, so don't go chasing the dream of a Supra TT at the bottom end of the market.
I'd shout MX5 anyday, but they have poor luggage space. They are reliable, cheap to buy, very cheap to fix and £3000 would get a mint supercharged one.
The purpose of a weekend toy is for it to be bought for pure fun and ignore the practicality side of things :D.

205 GTI?

Clio 172. Can't beat it for a mixture of performance, cheapish running cost etc. Big scene for it, it is todays equivalent of the 205 gti.

MX5 with a luggage rack. Problem solved :p

Seriously though, one of my reasons for getting a MX5 was to try and join the social scene but I seem to fall between the gap between those with the rattle can nato green stretched and stanced crew and the old boys brigade with their chrome upon chrome specials. Those with clean original ones just seem to drive them... or maybe I'm just an unsociable git :o

I have a company van that i use daily . The only reason i need luggage space is due to my other half's shopping sprees, I don't need allot of room just enough for some clothes or food. i did get a quote of £800 for a Honda integra but i feel you need to spend a bit more good model.

i have been keeping a eye out for a nice honda prelude. are they anygood?

If the social aspect is a big concern have you thought about a classic? Classic clubs seem to encourage anyone with something interesting rather than being car specific.

Oh and yes, a nice Integra will be more than your budget. I was looking the other day and all the nice DC2's seem to have vanished off the face of the earth and the ropey ones start at about £4k

A prelude could be a good compromise?
Nice old 2.2 VTEC and well priced reliable cars.

As its only for weekends would an mr2 turbo be a consideration? Not as chuckable but vastly quicker than the mx5, us it has a reasonable boot with some space at the front and behind the seats...you can get a reasonable amount of stuff in.

Easy to modify but there getting on so many are rusty/ aren't really suitable for every day use now - but that shouldn't be a problem.

Insurance should actually be reasonable too, but modding will really limit your insurers and therefore the kind of price you'll pay.

I don't think a 172 or st are special enough for a weekend car, though both are fun little hatches. Mx5 that's been turbo'd could be worth looking for, would need to check insurance and itd be handy to know what you were doing in the engine bay too.

True but the boot space requirement cuts out a lot of the more special suggestions.

This is true but tbh the boot of a fiesta isn't massively bigger than the mk2 mr2 despite the shape differences (Mazda quite a bit smaller) - take the seats or fold down ability into account and it makes a big difference so it depends how much that matters.

S14/a is also a good suggestion but good ones seem really hard to find now. Gt4 is another potential

3000gt, you know you want to ;)

Classic car insurance and limited mileage should get the insurance down to reasonable levels.
Though a GTO N/A might be more suited considering your age :)

get a dub, always something happening every weekend in the dub scene.

easy just buy a rusty mk2 and fit some broken coil overs and a set of bbs RAs and you'll be a scene hero

Some recommendations are more like daily drivers to me. Fiesta ST's and Clio's are the kind of cars you can use every day and are not special on the road at all. If it was me personally looking for a weekend car it would have either a sporting heritage, have something rare about it and most importantly be great fun to drive.

VW Corrado VR6, Alfa Romeo GTV V6Q2, MR2 Turbo, Peugeot 205 Gti etc are just a few examples.
