Alternating RPM on all fans

Hi All

Today my new Supermicro X10SL7-F motherboard arrived and I connected 4 BeQuiet case fans to the motherboard and also connected the BeQuiet CPU cooler to the motherboard.

All the fans work but ALL the fans speed alternate between normal RPM and running flat out. So every 15 seconds I can hear the fans running up to maximum RPM and then dropping down again to the normal speed.

I have tried changing the fans speed mode in the IPMI View interface but nothing has helped. I also looked in the BIOS but could not find any settings in there that could help (but I may have missed something!)

What am I doing wrong? Hearing the fans spin up every 15 seconds is extremely annoying! Funny thing is, I have almost the same fans in another machine but connected to an Asus motherboard and they all run at a constant speed and are whisper quiet.

Any ideas? What can I do to enable all the fans connected to this Supermicro board to run at a constant speed/RPM?

I should mention that I haven't even installed an operating system yet. I have only been in the BIOS/LSI congifuration screen and booting off USB sticks to flash firmware. In all these cases the fans have been behaving as described above. The OS I'll be installing will be FreeBSD 9.2, will the fans behave themselves after the OS installed maybe?

You could try downloading Speedfan. Great bit of software- fiddly to set up initially, but plenty of guides online.
Many bios fan control options are a bit coarse- my presets, are loud, louder and ******* loud, I had to use Speedfan to protect my sanity...

Pretty sure every modern mobo bios has some settings for fan speeds.

Yeah on here: http://www.supermicro.co.uk/products/motherboard/Xeon/C220/X10SL7-F.cfm

It mentions being able to view and control fan speed.

Yes, I know it *says* this but there are only 5 options: Loud or louder (lol) :D

I have tried them all and the fans still fluctuate in speed...its highly annoying. I'm thinking of ordering the Bitfinex Recon fan controller to resolve this issue. The fan controller on this motherboard is rubbish (which is a shame because the motherboard is AMAZING).

I have emailed Supermicro UK support so it will be interesting to see what they say (if they respond).

I'm running FreeBSD on this system so any Windows software won't work unfortunately.

The solution will have to be done in hardware...hence my consideration of the Bitfenix Recon fan controller! :p

Shame the controls are both crude and ineffective for your fans.

I have a completely unrelated motherboard and I'm using non-pwm fans. All of them are set to about 1100rpm down from 1600 with ramping up to higher speed kicking in at 60+ all through the bios.

Tell me about it! I have the same fans in my day to day desktop and they are so quiet I forget that the machine is even on!

The Supermicro board is fantastic but the fancontrol is garbage...theres just almost no way of controlling it in the BIOS or via IPMI.

Anyways, I have ordered the Bitfenix Recon fan controller from Overclockers so I am hoping that solves this annoying problem!! :)
