M&S have dropped a clanger

M&S should cater for these staff by finding them something else to do. it's not something a customer should ever be exposed to.

This is really the crux of the issue imo. The customer is entitled to a hassle-free shopping experience - being mucked about at the checkout over this is unacceptable.

I was actually in M&S first thing this morning doing some food shopping and it was absolutely manic. Was queuing for 20 minutes because all of the 8 checkouts were rammed. In this situation, if a cashier refused to serve a product it would be insane.

The whole idea is ridiculous from a practical perspective and a rather hair-brained in that nobody asked for it and nobody needs it.

A story in a tabloid isn't going to influence how I shop tbh.

Since when was the Telegraph a tabloid?

Why stop at bacon or alcohol though?

Why not allow their staff to refuse to sell to women not dressed in a burka? After all, isn't that part of Muslim law too?

Actually as an additional note regarding alcohol, maybe one of our Muslim members could clear this up for me but am I right in thinking that the Quran only specifically mentions wine. Not alcohol as a whole?

I expect this is a tabloid hate machine story and unless we have better evidence than the newspapers I'll take it with a pinch of salt.

The problem people have isn't that it's "Muslims - look what they're doing to our green and pleasant land" - well for some I suppose it is.

It's implied favourtism, up until very recently I was vegetarian, if I worked on a checkout would I expect to sell meat products and handle meat products? Yes. If I couldn't cope with that I wouldn't apply for the job in the first place.

Going by the Christian medical point - I would be very angry about that as well, it's not their place to decide on my health treatments based on their beliefs.

When you are dealing with others you put your beliefs to one side unless you are in a position where you can refuse.

I hate blood sports with a passion but some years ago when selling optics, I had to sell binoculars to someone who said they were for hunting, I still had to do it, that was my job. If I made a fuss or asked someone else to take over I would have been reprimanded.

Not so long ago I was asked to work with some images taken on a hunting trip in Africa, I politely declined to work with those images. I have my own business now, I make those rules, but when you work for someone else you and everyone else with the same job has to do the same thing, no exceptions.

I do worry what the agenda of these papers are though, why stir up hatred?

I remember a couple of years ago at Christmas some family members were 'outraged' by a newspaper story that the Royal Mail weren't selling nativity stamps anymore in case it offended the minority.

They ranted and raged and I said it was rubbish and we had a good bit of a Christmas row.

It wasn't until after they left (on amicable terms!) that I thought to check Royal Mails website...sure enough on the homepage - buy nativity stamps, loads of designs.

That's why I'll take this article with a pinch of salt until I have better evidence to the contrary, but why do papers print these things to upset people?

How about questioning a suspected customer to see if they are an apostate?

After all that's a far more serious crime to a Muslim than eating a bacon butty

Who said not having a belief (or abandoning one) is a crime?

Again, which person of reasonable intelligence cares what packaged product they're handling if it's not going to directly affect them?

They chose to work for a retailer so knew what the job would involve. People who shout about this kind of thing are no good for the greater good of humankind.

Just another reason to vote UKIP. I am fed up with how PC and limp wristed this county has become.

I have yet to see a Muslim work in my local M&S, as I live in Norwich so ethnic minorities only makeup 5% of the population.:p

Wow you can tell a person's religion just by looking at them?

I wonder what would happen if a vegetarian or vegan staff member refused to deal with food they don't consume? Would their beliefs be respected too or does an old book and supernatural being have to be involved?

They would have to deal with it, hence why I said about implied favoritism.

I would like to hear what M&S has to say before anyone else.

Interestingly they replied to a tweet by @Gman1212 a little while ago who asked them about it, simply saying something along the lines of "We respect each employee and...something something", (it was the usual fluff) I forget the exact wording now because they've deleted it.

How about Muslim staff to refusing to sell any non halal meat? Can't be long before they introduce that or that becomes a request.

It's also known they can only eat non halal meat that has been slaughtered by people of the "book" aka. Christians, Jews, Muslims but only after saying a prayer.

So unless they are going down the line asking if the guy who works at the abattoir is either a Christian, Jew or Muslim they can't eat it. afaik

Im going to get a job there and refuse to actually work as its against my beliefs to work work more than 8.24mins a day.

They should be sacked as it they cant complete there duties, dont like selling beer than dont work in a pub. The muslim community wonder why they get "bad press" i say **** em, send them all back to saudi and have a nice happy life there.
