I'm craving some sci fi tonight

I'd agree, it's a classic of the day, but nowadays it's got poor special effects, hammy overacting, weak, cheesy and naive characters, etc. It's been superseded by more sophisticated filming, scripts, characters and audiences than we had sixty years ago.

Can't believe no-one has mentioned Serenity yet. Properly good.

It ruined the unfinished series by making the Reavers a an experiment gone wrong as if they'd never heard of medical trials before and not as brutal in the series 1 takes down an entire carrier yet in the film an entire fleet is needed also they never really concluded several of the mysteries in the seires e.g "2x2 Hands are blue" sfaic it ruined Firefly!

As for my mentions

ST in order of Greatness DS9, FILMS 1-7 & 10+11, TNG, TOS, ENT, VOY, Films 8&9

SG again in order of Greatness Universe, Atlantis, SG1

Bab 5 + Crusade + Films

Heroes Seasons 1&2 (3&4 only worth a watch for completeness)

Falling Skies

SW IV,V,VI (NO PREQUELS!!!!!CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH)

Silent Running (slow film but classic 70's sci fi)

Logans Run (the effects will be dodgy after all these years though)
Invasion of The Bodysnatchers (I prefer the 1978 version)

Bit late, but get Netflix.
Got series like hawkins grand design, when we left eart and dozens of others
Then plenty of films including europa report and many dozens of others.

Andromeda is OK I found.

Started very well but after one of the characters left in the early series it started sliding. In the later seasons it bombed hard. It went from having a nice continual sub plot to a set of random encounters summed up nicely in 40mins. It was obvious they had no other ideas to throw in and just limped it on.

Real shame as I got to season 4 and lost the will to view :(

I quite enjoyed Elysium. :)

Definitely adding District 9 to the list of Sci Fi you should watch.

Also Oblivion.

Is Cloud Atlas any good as it's next on my list?

Watched Oblivion and Elysium recently and really liked them. Can anyone suggest something similar, preferably fairly recent? Liked District 9 too.

If you can, get a hold of From the Earth to the Moon

Was an HBO mini series which details the early American space program, Mercury > Apollo and is pretty damn amazing! Very good production values and in the style of the film Apollo 11 with some pretty big names playing various characters.

I remember this, was very good! It was a lot like band of brothers each episode enough to make you need to lie down but also something there that makes you want to put the next episode in straight away!
