Random acts of kindness at Christmas

With all the depressing news stories about at the moment, I just wanted to share my heartwarming tale from today with you.

I work for the local authority in a project that supports disadvantaged families, and a lot of the families we work with rely on foodbanks from time to time.

I went with a colleague on Friday to pick up some food for one of her families, and whilst we were there, we noticed that the front door was broken. We asked what had happened, and they said that during the night, someone had smashed their way in, and stolen most of the food they had in their stores. They were particularly upset because they said if anyone ever comes to them and is needy, they will always provide them with food, so they didn't need to break in and steal it. Most of the food was due to go to needy families at Christmas.

So as you do, I had a rant on Facebook about it, and then this morning, I get an email from my sister who works for Lloyds Bank in the same city, basically saying, she wasn't making any promises, but if she was to put out an email to the rest of her fellow employees, asking for food donations, would someone from our office be able to come and pick the food up, to take to the foodbank?

She sent the email at 9:20, and 4 hours later we picked up all of this

2 car loads of food. They had received the email, and gone out in today's horrible weather to buy all of this food. More is coming tomorrow.

My sister was in tears, as she couldn't believe how generous people had been in just a few short hours, she thought she might get a few carrier bags worth. The foodbank will be over the moon.

Heartwarming isn't it? Happy Christmas everyone. :) :) :) :)

Hah there's a lot of beer there!!! Nicely done though :)

My personal policy atm is to empty my wallet to homeless people. I've yet to encounter any, but I'm not struggling and I don't see why anyone else should, particularly considering the weather!!

No beer. All tinned stuff like soups etc. Can't donate alcohol to food banks :p

Heartwarming stuff indeed to restore my faith in humanity, though it does take a special kind of **** to steal from a food bank.

Merry Christmas! :)

Yesterday while fighting my way into the car park and then round the Purley Tesco store I finally gathered my bit of shopping, waited for about 20mins in a queue to pay. Behind me a couple let an elderly lady (easily 90+) go in front of them and I helped her with her basked and items onto the conveyer belt.

This lady was full on shaking hands and perpetual confused expression. Her shopping was clearly enough for just one person for several days, I don't know for sure but this is a couple of days before Christmas..... I am sure I don't need to spell it out.

I did the only thing that came to mind and paid for her shopping, wasn't much but clearly a weeks pension but nothing to me. Hopefully I helped lift her christmas spirits a little bit.

Stealing from a food back!? Unbelievable turn out would like to think my workplace would get a similar stash together.

Yeah, the banking group nice opposite the entrance to the car park :)

Ahh I live around there, might go knock on the door next time the cupboards are bare :o

Joking of course, good on them (and you!) and shame on the gits that broke into the food bank.

Inspiring stuff. There are plenty of good people out there. Not everyone takes the first step to help others though, sometimes it requires a little nudge but it all works out :)
