I'm not sure which card to get. Initially I didnt want to spend more than the 270ish that the 770 would cost, but I'm wondering if it would be sufficent.

I currently use 1440 with a secondary 1080 from a gigabyte 570 oc and if I try to play bf4 at 1440 on almost totally min settings it blows the vram limit, so would the 2g on a 770 be enough? At some point I expect I shall have a secondary 1440 too, should that be a consideration?

I had mostly discounted the r290s because of them being loud, hot and using stock coolers but are they better options than the nv cards?

Second, which is the better option for the 780 -

Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x "GHz Edition" £400
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 780 WindForce 3x OC £380
EVGA GeForce GTX 780 SC ACX Superclock £400

I've read that the evga is faster but the gigabyte is cooler? Does the slower shader speed on the evga actually matter and is the the difference between the two gigabyte cards just that one is factory overclocked?

Similarly for the 770s is there much diff between -
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 770 WindForce 3x OC
EVGA GeForce GTX 770 SC ACX Dual Bios

EVGA are pretty good, and I would recommend you the Classified one.

At £400 range, any GTX780 that is factory overclocked at 1000+ will do.
As long as the cooler has 3 fans you will be OK regarding noise levels also. (Zotac, PNY, Gigabyte etc).

Personally got for a PNY XLR8 OC and haven't regretted it, but you can find quite a few good around.

Sapphire 290X Toxic when it's released, it'll blow any/all 780 out of the water and give the 780ti a run for its money :p

Or if the 290X toxic is too much, the 290 toxic :)

The current custom sapphires aren't the toxic versions.

I'm going to go with the Gigabyte R9 290 Windforce, it's roughly the same price as the GTX 780 and benchmarks I've seen have it performing slightly better for the games I want to play.

I moved from a GTX780 to a R9 290X and the R9 290X is simply a faster GPU, the only downside is the reference cooler.

Have to agree, evga usually bring out the best Nvidia cards. If i was going Nvidia and had loads of money EVGA would be where my money went. BFG were the only other partner who offered the same kind of service.

MSI and Gigabyte have and always will have better coolers, and you do not have to send it abroad for RMA. The best, how amusing.

Another vote for EVGA. They actively help people on these forums and have no problem with water cooling. The warranty is with the card's owner and not the original purchaser and RMA will be dealt with by OcUK, so no excess postage costs.

So we got on who moved from 780 to 290x and thought it was better, and one who went from 290x to 780 and thought it was better. Lol.

Don't think anyone can go wrong with either. Both have benefits outside of performance. For 3d,g-sync, physx(?), and for Amd... Mantle (?), Ummmm, sure there something else....

I went from a R9 290 to a GTX 780 Ghz, couldn't be happier.

I am typing this using a HD 5970 and couldn't be happier.

Sometimes people get hung up about tiny differences between cards that they would not even notice in game play.

OP go for a non ref 290P or 780 they are both good cards.
