Hello
my 500w psu can't seem to handle my system now I have a r9270x , looking at a 650w / 700w replacement , ideally modular. Anyone know if the 650 bequiet powerzone that's on offer will fit? I can't find any dimensions for it. If not any other recommendations? £80 is my max budget .

Cheers

Which 500w psu do you have now? A decent one should easily handle two 270x's let alone one.

Non modular power supplies are better for the bitfenix prodigy as the modular connectors add extra length and space is very limited.

The recommended length for a psu in the bitfenix prodigy is 140mm modular or 160mm non-modular. The be quiet powerzone is 175mm AND modular so it will not fit.

All ATX PSU's are the same dimensions as far as I know, so yes, it will fit.

This isn't true :P

Cheers, it's a OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply I'm running i7 3770, two hard drives , 8gb ram, 1 ssd, corsair h55 with two case fans and the msi r9 270x.

Works fine without the gpu or sometimes with the gpu until it's under load or I connect a couple of usb devices such as external hard drives . Can't think what else it is, re-installed drivers, re-installed windows etc test temps all seem fine, when it crashes I either get blank screen or it all goes a solid colour with faint stripes and I have to reboot.

Cheers

There's always a chance it could be the gpu, what you describe it could be either. That psu is definitely on the lower end quality wise so wouldn't be surprised if its the issue.

I'd stick with non modular for the prodigy. It will be a real hassle trying to fit a modular one in there.

Any of these would be fine. I'd lean towards the super flower as its gold rated.

Be quiet has them as 175 on their site so too long for a Prodigy

Edit: as above :)

Modular or semi modular are best for the prodigy, you just have to plug your cables in before you slide in the PSU.

One thing you can also do Sketch is, the 4 holes that the PSU plate fixes to the case with, screw a motherboard standoff into each of the holes in the case before fitting the PSU it will give you a little extra room

This guy has gone 2 deep with his

I had a 160mm in mine using this method and it fit great.

The maximum size is 160mm for a fully modular psu according to the technical data on Bitfenix website.

This Silverstone psu is 160mm deep. Would 600w be enough ?

That's the max, not what they recommend. Putting a 160mm modular in there will be really difficult and stress the cables/connectors.

I've built a prodigy system before with a non modular psu and there's plenty of space to the left of the psu cage to hide away extra cables so having a modular psu isn't needed at all.

On modular psu's the cables are spread out across the psu so it will be more difficult to keep tidy.

I'd agree with Spixel. Besides, adding anything (in future) will be more difficult with a modular one, as you'd have to remove the PSU. BitFenix recommend non-modular too.

Just fitted a non-modular EVGA 600B to a Phenom yesterday (same interior dimensions as the Prodigy), and like Spixel said, cable management isn't a problem.

There's not that much extra you can add once your build is done, it's not like your ever adding another Gpu in it.
For me cable management is easier without stuffing a load of SATA and Molex cables your never using down the side of the case. Its easier if they were never plugged into the PSU in the first place.

That might be true, but not in a prodigy. The psu compartment is completely different than other cases and is best suited to non modular.

Just saw your pic, what about the gpu cables? :)

what you wanna get is this:
YOUR BASKET
1 x Silverstone SST-ST65F-G Strider Gold Series - 650 Watt £119.99
Total : £128.69 (includes shipping : £7.25).

140mm in depth 650w gold psu

i've got this running in my prodigy powering a 3770k + 7990 no probs

Definitely a nice psu but that price is too high tbh. The modular connectors also come out pretty far from the chassis so its real depth is a bit more.

That's another story lol, made custom cables but took that long deciding what GPU, I ended up with a different case and 2 cards. :D

A better 450 or 500W PSU would do it, you don't need more than that really.

Best suited to non-modular you say? Fantastic! Get this, hands down, no brainer. :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x SuperFlower Golden Green HX 550W "80 Plus Gold" Power Supply - Black £53.99

- 550W
- 80+ Gold efficiency
- One of the best PSU OEM's out there
- Only 145MM long
- £54

Or if you really want 650W for some reason (you really don't need it for your current setup, but perhaps if you were to get an R9 290X and overclock the nuts off of everything or something)

Or if you really want modular, get this and use the aforementioned stand-off trick as it is a 160MM unit.
