Help (Pioneer VSX-922)

So I've had my amp for a long while, I had everything set up perfectly and everything was great.

But then Christmas happened! :mad:

And some inconsiderate **** decided to buy me a 3d blu ray player which is causing me great stress in trying to get to work properly.

So I had a normal blu ray player before and i thought a simple switch over with the same HDMI cable would, using the same inputs into the amp etc. work but no... I'm not getting any video or audio from my TV...

I've checked with the same HDMI cable on another TV (Without it going through the amp) and it works fine. I've looked up online and it does say this amp is 3D compatible but I've read in the blu ray player booklet that that shouldnt even matter and I should be getting a picture....

The Amp picks up the 3d blu ray player at first when i turn it on the HDMI light comes on, but then after about 2 seconds the HDMI light turns off again...

Im stuck please help

You're right that the TV should work. Even if the TV isn't 3D the Blu-ray player should sense that and adjust accordingly. However, we are dealing with HDMI. It does stupid things sometimes.

As a quick test, power all off and swap back to the old Blu-ray player connected directly to the TV. This will show you if all is reasonably okay with the cable and TV.

Power off again and then connect the 3D Blu-ray player. If you get a picture this way then power off again and connect the amp in circuit.

If you are still having problems then the next step is to try a factory reset and then a firmware update.... Unfortunately both impossible until you get a picture. Catch 22. Are there any other TVs in the house you can try it with?

So the 3d blu ray player works fine when connected directly to the TV.

I do have another TV to experiment with but what should I be testing? The only problem I get is when the HDMI goes through the amp.

Also I've tested both HDMI cables that I'm using and both give me 3D video when plugged directly into my TV.

I just don't get any output when it goes 3D Blu Ray player -> Amp HDMI in
and then Amp HDMI out -> TV HDMI In (ARC)

Ok...

Weird new development... Now I'm really baffled.

Now the disk will play and i get audio and video while connected through the amp, but when i try to veiw the home screen of the blu ray player, i get a blank screen.

What the hell is going on? I can't seem to find what is causing the issue... The blu ray player shows the home screen fine without being connected to the amp..... but when connected to the amp will only show the movie

The point of the second TV was if you couldn't get a picture from the Pioneer direct in to the main TV.

Okay, three questions...

1) What's the firmware status of all three devices? Can you update them if not on the latest versions

2) Does the 922 have scaling; and if so can you set it to Pass Thru?

3) Turn off any HDMI connectivity features: CEC, VieraLink, Simplink, etc etc. The simpler you can make the Blu-ray > amp > TV interface then the better

I fistly did a firmware update on the blu ray player which didn't solve the problem (But was still probably useful to get done)
Then I though i'd try the easiest of solutions that you mentioned and I turned of the CEC on the blu ray menu (while it was plugged directly to the TV so i could see it) then turned it off, plugged it back through the amp and bingo!

I'm looking at the home screen right now and its plugged straight into the Pioneer!

Yes If your VSX-922 has this same setting screen as my VSX-921 then try playing with trying different settings on this screen.

I need help again!

So I haven't got round to using my blu ray player again after I finally got it working and watched a movie.

But now for some unknown reason even though I haven't changed any settings, the problem has come back! What the hell?

The CEC function on the blu ray player is still disabled (which was the fix last time) and I have tried messing around with all other HDMI contols on and off, to no success....

What's going on

If it helps, It seems that the Blu ray player will automatically adjust it's display settings when I play a disk. What's weird is, it will adjust to something and It will successfully play a 3D movie (when connected through the amp) But it will have no audio or display when it's on it's 2D settings, no home screen and no 2D movies play.

When playing 2D or 3D the player will check the status of the accompanying devices. The trickiest one is usually playing 3D.

Make sure CEC is off on all three devices: TV, amp and Blu-ray player.

Put a 2D disc in the BD player, then switch all three devices off. Wait one minute. Next, power up in this order: #1 TV #2 amp #3 BD player.

If all of your gear is running on the latest firmware (have you checked and made sure?) and you're still getting problems then it looks like a fundamental compatibility issue between the player and the rest of the system. Occasionally these things happen. Contact the player manufacturer as a start and see if they have any input.

If it's not solvable then either change the player or go back to using the old Blu-ray player for 2D and the new one for 3D. That's not ideal, but if there's something hard to pin down between the three devices then it might be the simplest solution.

There are technical products you could try that store the EDID info so the system sees consistency. However, these cost more that the price of two budget Blu-ray players so they're a bit of a sledgehammer-to-crack-a-walnut solution.

Got it working again! I really can't see what I did this time that I did't do a thousand times yesterday but thanks lucid whatever you made me do worked haha. Now I'm just scared to turn it all off again in case it never comes back.

Oh and in case you are interested, The HDMI contols on my amp have to be on for the rest of the stuff to function how I like it, and I have to have veira link from my TV on or it doesnt even connect through my amp, but even with both these things turned on I'm still getting the blu ray player to finally work!
