got my new sapphire 290x( radeon R9 290x bf4 Edition 4096mb gddr5 (21226-00-53g) today. put it in the second pci-e slot and kept my 7970 in the top slot. plugged the monitor into the 290 and it booted up. as soon as i tired to update my drivers to 13.2 i got black screens. put the 290x into the top slot and moved the 7970 to the third slot but did'nt plug the pci-e leads into the 7970 works ok now but as soon as i try to mine it black screens again?? as it is the card is unusable?

I would try updating your motherboard to the latest bios. This has fixed quit a lot of problems people have been having. Make sure your 290x is in the primary pci-e as in another thread a user reported his 290x would only work properly while in the primary slot.

i have my 7970 in the second pci-e slot and the 290x in the primary pci-e slot. my board bios is updated to the latest. i have tried different graphic drivers. i have the screen plugged into the 7970 as the 290x will sometimes bootup and sometimes won't. now with the 290x plugged in the pc sometimes refuses to get past a black screen so at the moment i have the 290x in the pci-e slot but the pci-e plugs out and the pc is working. when the s90x is plugged in i get wierd pc behaviour. my file permissions changed theirselves,my start menu was blank, and i have lost all my coin wallets and had to reinstall? because i was forced to do a system backup which was 3 weeks old. i am gutted as i was expecting great things from this card for mining. how can these 290's be still on the shelves with so many problems. they are unusable like this. i am going to have to send it back. trouble is,do i get a replacement or get my money back?

Get Asus GPU Tweak installed and create a profile with 4000 memory clock instead of 5000, see if it makes it more stable.
That's what I have to do with mine at the moment til I can figure out whats going on.
I have an RMA raised on standby for when I finally give up on testing come Friday.

should'nt have to do all this though should we. so many 290's with this problem. will asus tweak work on my sapphire? the voltage is locked and i don't want to start changing bios on a brand new card

Asus GPU Tweak will work with any card, mines a Powercolor.
We shouldn't have to do a lot of things in IT but unfortunately that's the way it goes...

All you have to do is fire up GPU tweak, down the memory clock from 5000 to 4000, click apply at the bottom, then save, then slot 1, that way the downclock is saved as profile 1.

Just give it a shot then try some testing with 3D Mark, FuMark and some games and then compare it to the normal 5000 clock. Try and keep the tests the same to rule out different factors.

If you have a second monitor have GPU-Z up with the VRM temps and GPU Tweak with the GPU core temp so you can watch them at the same time.

Mine are cool as a cucumber thanks to my Icy however that's not the problem :<

Mine does all sorts of random ****.
Great example at the moment:-

Trying to play sleeping dogs, on stock settings the thing black screens, sound continues to play for about 15 seconds and then full lockup. Happens on near enough all cutscenes (1440p Max Settings).
Switch the machine off/on and the graphics on the Windows logon screen (8.1 64 bit) will be ****ed (640x480). Hangs on the logon screen for about 20 seconds where no input can be performed and then all monitors show no output.
Turn off/on again and everything comes back to normal.
Login and use GPU tweak to load my profile for 4k mem clock instead of 5k and everything is then stable for a full days gaming (6 to 8 hours).

This is just one example...
Same pretty much goes for BF4 and any other game that's pushing the card full on.

Looking at GPU-Z now after a full 2 hours of sleeping dogs (with it alt+tabbed in the background):-
GPU Load = 100%
Mem Usage = 1814MB
GPU Temp = 62c
VRM1 Temp = 72c
VRM2 Temp = 50c

At first I was worried it could have been temp/voltage related but having monitored temps closely and replace PSU i'm satisfied that is not the issue at all.

Driver issue? Possibly... But having to tweak clocks down is bullcrap to maintain stable so hence why I don't think it's driver related meaning it could only be hardware related however after downing the mem clock to 4k its as smooth as a babies bum.
Something dodgy in the mem chips maybe? I got Elp's not Hynix and that seems to be a general consensus over at overclock.net forums.

just passed a furmark burnin test with 900/4000 score 6730 points. gonna try a mine now.by the way i have my 7970 still in the second pci-e slot but the pci-e cables are unplugged

The fact that there's no power too it should be enough, shouldn't have to pull it.

Jot down all these tests your performing than perform them again on 1000/4000 and then again on default stocks 1000/5000.

Need a good set of test results. Don't just presume! Presumption is the mother of all f*ckup's!

right, i'm mining as i type on the 290x only. i turned off gputweak and used AB. i changed memory from 1250 to 1000 and core from 1000 to 900. voltages changed to core voltage +100 and aux voltage to +20 fan speed to 100% even though it's w/cooled, oh and power limit to +50

 Sounds pretty identical to my 290, probably looking at an RMA.

Your running stock bios right?
