New Gigabyte GTX 780 Ghz coil whine

lol. Tried enabling Shadowplay and my screen went black, rebooted my PC and the 780 had been disabled.

Jesus christ Nvida are terribad, just gonna DSR this thing and get a 290, what a colossal waste of time. Probably gonna cost me a bit in postage but the sooner this thing is out of my sight the better.

I know first hand how frustrating this is, been through it more than enough times over the years myself. I had to return one of my ghz 780's and my american friend had issue after issue after issue with his and had to return it recently too. The replacements in both cases were spot on. I am only weighing in on this as i really love these cards. I have 2 and they are lightning fast, silent and run cool. Would definetly recommend going through the RMA and getting it replaced...just my $0.02

I would love to give another a try if possible as the card seems ridiculously fast and extremely cool and quiet! Really am gutted that it's been troublesome. Thanks for chiming in and letting me know that this has happened to other people.

No probs mate, hope you get it sorted. Worst time of the year to deal with RMA'ing. Definetly give it another go :)

Just thought I would update this thread with a video.

Has anyone ever experienced this before?

I updated the BIOS for motherboard, disabled all overclocks on memory, cpu etc full clean driver sweep and have tried two different monitors and 2 different power supplies.

Turn the volume up to hear the sound crashing, sorry for quality, shot with my phone.

During these freezes, GPU Z shows the core clock dropping from 1100mhz to around 500-600mhz and the power drops from 1.16 to 0.9.

Should I DSR or RMA?

I noticed that the boost on this thing is supposed to be 1072mhz core clock but when gaming it goes to 1110.5mhz could that be too much? I haven't touched it, this is what it came like.

Most of the b1s boost to 1149-1188 out the box, 1110 should not be a problem though you never know.

EDIT: Just saw the comment about the back plate, mine barely even gets warm to the touch after a session if bf4, have you checked all the fans are working on the card? (Though mines in a 540 air with watercooling on the CPU - so it doesn't have to deal with heat from the CPU and has the 140mm exhaust fan right above it and unblocked airflow out the top through the fans/rad for the watercoolin).

Sorry to bump this thread, has anyone experienced anything similar to what I show in the video?

I would RMA it mate, definitely seems like there are issues present. Wouldn't imagine you will have any probs getting it replaced. Bailey from CS handled my RMA and the guy was a legend, give him a shout and see what he says.

That video is pretty similiar to any instance I've seen of a GPU overheating (though often you start to get tearing polygons to) which is a bit strange as it shouldn't be happening like that with the WF3 cooler, maybe the cooler isn't attached properly :|

Thanks guys, the GPU doesn't seem to go over 64c during a stress test in furmark but the backplate is extremely hot and all 3 fans are definitely spinning. I'll have to see what customer support say. Ideally I would like a replacement because it is a lovely graphics card but if a DSR jobbie would be quickest then will have to do that and lose some cash on postage.

Have you checked VRM temps in GPU-z?

Something definitely isn't quite right there though - mines been sitting idle in eve online most of the day and just had a quick round on BF4 and the backplate is cool to the touch barely a hint of warmth to it. (Just stuck one of the temp probes from my frontpanel thingy on it and its showing 20.3C).

EDIT: Left it on while running around the test range map on BF4 - still doesn't exceed 30C in 5 minutes or so of running around it.

Wow that does sound weird that mine is extremely hot and yours is cool. Another strange thing is that I cannot get VRM temps to show in GPU Z or MSI afterburner, could this indicate a fault? Are you able to see VRM temps mate? Thx.

No VRM temps on mine actually - never even looked for them before - assumed they would as all my recent cards have heh.

Just done an hour or so on BF4 and warmest the backplate was showing (not sure how accurate this temp thing is mind) was 35C - to touch it was like say a cup of tea that had been sitting around for 5 minutes since being poured.

It is sounding to me like the heatsink isn't sitting quite right - not so bad that the core is artifacting but enough that some parts of the card are getting too warm and the heats being removed via the backplate rather than the fins.

Thanks a lot mate, hopefully CS will get back to me tomorrow. Will try and give this same model another go and if it doesn't work out will grab a 290 sapphire Tri fan.
