:)Hi guys,

Please can you help me. I have an old Shuttle XPC and finally ordered some stuff to build a MATX system to replace it. I got this:

  • Case - Parvum Systems MATX S1.0
  • CPU - Intel Core i5-4670 (Haswell)
  • PSU - Corsair RM 850W 80+ Gold
  • Memory - Corsair Dominator GT 8GB 2x4GB DDR3 2133Mhz
  • CPU cooler - CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO

For GFX I was thinking of getting either a GTX 780 or 780Ti (EVGA superclocked with ACX or reference cooler).

I'm planning on air cooling only and only have a 1920x1200 monitor @ 60mhz. Would I even need a 780 or 780 Ti and what would be best - reference or ACX? I'm a bit worried about heat and heard the ACX cooler pushes hot air into the case. Can anyone recommend me the best solution? I'm looking for a good deal and looking to play Skyrim and BF4 on Ultra but at 1920x1200 for the next year or so. Or should I go for a lesser card?

Thanks,
Moores25

I have a 780 SC ACX and the cooler is great for cooling the card itself, but as you say it does dump a lot of heat into the case. If case heat is your primary concern, the (very nice) reference cooler is much better at expelling air from the case.

For the next year at 1080p: 780.

I've recently gone from a reference to a non-reference 780, and the extra heat inside the case is noticeable. However, all you need is a couple of 80mm fans in the back and you're sorted.

Thanks guys, sounds like 780 it is :-) I have some extra cash so could stretch to 780 Ti but wondering if it's worth it at 1080p? Would future proof things for a multi-monitor setup I guess but is there much difference @ 1920?

There is a difference at 1080p, but not nearly £200 difference. The 780 will keep everything above 60fps.

And that means you can put the extra money into the rest of your build. What else is on your list? Have you already bought the components mentioned in your first post?

Thanks Fulax, yep I ordered the stuff in the first post from OCUK yesterday. I have a SSD already from the old Shuttle cube so all good. Was also going to order a Gigabyte Sniper M5 mobo and that should be the lot :-) Any further suggestions?

I should probably mention I have a Radeon 5870 lying around that I got on the cheap last week but doubt it'll cut it moving forward which is why I'm looking at 780/780 Ti

As you live in a warmer climate, the 780 non reference, with a 120mm fan bottom front and 2x80mm fans rear. As long as you have good air circulation, a single card should`nt be to much of an issue in regards to heat.

Seems you don`t. :D
