R9 290 (x-edition) DOA?

strange, I rebooted my machine, and played a good few rounds of natural selection 2. The GPU usage was at 100% the whole time, max temps of 92c clock speed of 975MHz the whole time no throttling.

The issue I had when I was playing DOTA2 seemed to happen during loading or when the GPU was under light load, because the GPU was apparently throttling back even though the temps were only 80c and the GPU usage was less than 30%.

I guess its just a bug with the power play or something.

edit: thinking about it I remember having similar problems with the 5850s when they first came out due to having multiple monitors. In-fact the more I think about it the more I think it has something to do with me having a 144Hz monitor...

make sure all your chipset drivers are up to date and that you are running the latest direct x version.

Yeah these are OK as well, I had to install new chipset drivers when I updated my motherboard BIOS.

It does seem like its just a problem with DOTA2, all other games which put the GPU under higher loads don't cause this problem.

well fingers crossed i have fixed my problem. i had watercooled mine out of the box and it seems i had a senior moment and left off 3 little bits of thermal pad. so this time i put all thermal pads on plus a dab of mx-4 on everything. put it all back and fired it up with no problems so far. now to get it to run before i had to knock the memory down to 1000. i am now running 1100/1400 and i'm mining at the moment. so far so good. i was convinced that it was that my card had elpida memory as a lot of ppl said but on taking the water block back off it's got hynix so hopefully i've sorted it. might be worth taking your cooler off and checking all the thermal pads and putting a dab of mx-4 or something on each pad

It's OK I was just being a Muppet, turns out I just had to use the +/- keys to adjust the multiplier rather than having a drop down menu like there was before. All is fine, now to play some games :)

Dont worry mate, i did the exact same thing, filled the swear box that week i can tell ya  :D
