So I have blown a big chunk of my Xmas bonus on a sony 55" 4k tv and now I have started looking at updating my AV receiver - the sony strdn1040 looks to be a good addition but I would welcome anyone's input on other options.

Thanks for your help :)

I have the str-dn840 coupled with my W905, brilliant amp the 1040 is it's big bro. Got mine free with the tv only downside so far is the size.

I really like my 1040.

I had some reservations at first, and actually wanted the Onyko 828 or the Marantz SR7007 but now after a few days with the Sony, I am not sure where would the extra money go that the Sony can't do. In fact, the Sony ticks more boxes than the almost all amps in its class with the sound quality to match. I am not saying it is the best amp out there but it is very good value for money. You can get it for as little as £400 right now.

One of the new Anthem ones, although there isn't a receiver out there yet that can handle native 4K content (they only upscale 1080p) so whenever they come out with 4K BD players or what not you'd need to upgrade again.

Thanks for your thoughts on the sony - it does seem to give me the best options within its price range plus it's not a huge outlay for when native 4k becomes move available.

Spook187 it does seem like a stupid purchase with no 4k content available and to be honest I had initially purchased a 55" W9 and then had a change of heart after seeing both setup next to each other and showing none showroom content.

Thanks again guys and have a great Xmas.:)

That's what I am thinking, get something decent but reasonably priced for now until the next wave of tech comes along.

HDMI 2 will be the next biggest change, more than 3D, so in a few years will be when I get a amp in 4 figures.

When Sony announced it’s newest 4K televisions at IFA 2013, it also announced that most of its existing 4K sets can be upgraded to HDMI 2.0 by the end of 2013 through a simple firmware update. Just download the update and let the TV install it.

Which is fine for the TV, but doesn't help with the fact you can't buy an AVR that will pass a native 4K signal, so even if you managed to get your hands on that Sony pre-loaded box or the RedRay player and had 4K content you could only connect direct to the TV to view it. CES isn't far off so maybe this might change though.
