Cryptolocker ransomware has 'infected about 250,000 PCs'

It encrypts your files and when it's done encrypting, you get a pop up demanding you to pay up $300 in USD, GBP or Bitcoins (and anything else equal to that amount), at this point you have two choices - pay up to get the decryption key to get your files back or start all over/restore from a backup, you don't have any other choices.

This is why having a backup is very important, but even that won't be enough, you'll want to have a backup of the backup stored safely and offline, because it also encrypts the drives/network shares connected to the computer.

Everything I've read about it seems to say it's targeting 'small businesses' and you need to 'install it' from something like 'documentname.pdf.exe' or similar. Most tech people would know not to run that but it can catch out the office worker who is used to getting lots of emails.

thanks for the info guys.
is it possible to get this virus on an apple laptop,
as I heard you cant?

Windows only, maybe for now, it targets businesses and majority of them runs Windows, some of them don't even have a proper back up solution, which is why this malware is effective.

.exe delivered by email is one of the oldest tricks in the book.

No idea why more providers aren't blocking this simple attack vector.
