Jaguar XF 3.0d R-Sport

It's beautiful and with the fantastic N57 engine only 0.4 seconds to 60 behind the 3.0DS Jag ;)

It wasn't a serious suggestion mind, just happened to find it and thought 'Thats like an XF only not from the previous decade' :p For me thats the problem with big money on an XF - they are pretty old now, they came out back when the competition was the E60 and the W211 E Class. This is why I'd be far more comfortable with the idea of a £20k one.

I guess as always looks are purely a subjective thing, but that BMW does absolutely nothing for me. I would rather have a car that is from a previous decade for decent money as I think the exterior is prettier and the interior far more interesting, BMW interiors look too utilitarian for me. That aside the XF is still a fantastic car and drives really well and doesn't really lose anything despite the age of the platform which is why I will trade mine in for another XF soon.

Why trade for another? May as well keep yours if you like it. The longer you keep it the better value you'll get from it and then you can leap to the next gen XF when it appears.

Unless you are moving from a Focus 1.6 to an ST or something I've never fully understood the rationale behind moving within a particular model. Lots of money for little fundamental gain.

It was something I've been thinking about for quite a while, it boils down to cost of upgrading. Do you keep it longer and get better value from the car as you say and run it till it starts costing decent money to keep running and then upgrade. Or do you keep a car until you think the car drops to a level where you think it's still worth quite a bit and the cost of upgrading is still reasonable.

As I say its something I've been contemplating and I don't really have an answer. One you get your money worth out of the car but costs a lot to upgrade, the other you get to drive a newer car more often with a lower cost to change.

A new car drops a greater percentage of its price in the first couple of years then levels off for a few years and then drops a bit more as mileage becomes more of an issue. I was just trying to see if I could work it so that I gain the most from my current car whilst reducing the cost of upgrading. Either way it will cost a load of money.

Levels off for a few years, very optimistic to think the depreciation on big luxury saloons ever levels off, it levels off when they reach 12+ years old and sit at £2k, until then, it's losing money at a rate that slows with every passing year. Sure the 'cost to change' might be lower but cost to change is only part of it, it's more about TCO.

The biggest outside of the norm effect on residuals is always the introduction of an all-new model, something that will happen when the one you buy next is, or was, worth quite a bit of money. Whereas if you are still in the XF you currently claim to enjoy owning then the effect will be much reduced and the money you've not spent on even more depreciation resulting from your sideways move to a newer version of the same car can be put towards the new model...

Sorry I didn't mean it levels off in terms of it doesn't drop further in value, what I meant to say was the rate in which it depreciates lowers past the first couple of years.

I don't disagree with what you are saying and it is something I have definitely considered.

Nothing wrong with ex management cars, they are usually well spec'd and looked after. Two of mine have been ex management.

You might struggle to get any discount as I tried several dealers and they didn't entertain any discount what so ever. As I said earlier, Lancaster have a sale on till the 5th January so you should see a drop in price anyway.

It also looks to be pretty well priced to be honest for a MY13 car. Speak to a dealer and tell them what you want and get them to see whats in Jag central stock as well.

That portfolio looks very nice indeed..

I don't know if it's still going, but Jaguar were recently offering two years free servicing if you took out finance with them. Might be worth doing some number crunching, even if you took it out then paid it off shortly afterwards...

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your help. However we've just made a few decisions on our house which means I'm more comfortable spending considerably less now.

I'm setting my sights to around £15k now, however do not like the pre facelift XF.

I've looked at the Passat CC, A4, A6 and to be fair, don't really like any of them!

Whatever I do, I keep coming back to the BMW 535d now!

Thanks,

Mal

Don't buy a 5 Series at that money, it would be an E60 and pretty old too. Learn to like the prefacelift XF, great cars for 15k.
