Hello all,

I got a LG LA42620V and I'm loving it so far but I've been trying to find out if it will play .mkv files via USB before I go out and by a 64gb USB stick.

I know it's meant to play loads of formats but wanted to check as most of the 3d films are .mkv

Thanks!!

If the TV is new then surely it came with one of those instruction type books that tells you what type of files it will play.

If it's a LG smart TV the formats supported will be...

File Extensions
.divx
.wmv
.avi
.mp4
.mkv
.ts

Video Codecs
H.264/AVC
DivX 4/5/6
VC-1
XViD
MPEG2
MPEG1

Audio Codecs
MP3
AAC
DD
PCM
WMA

.mkv is a container, it'll really depend what is inside the file wether or not it will play ok or not. Bit rate / resolution etc will have a large part to play in this, don't expect a tv to play back a high bitrate mkv.

NP :)

Thank you for the info gents very helpful :)

I've converted one home made film .mkv to an apple TV format which I use normally to watch my content through and ask seemed well but some scenes it gets jittery. I guess the 10gb file size will be the cause of this?

The 3d quality is fantastic otherwise!

Yes it is unlikely that the tv will be capable of playing such high bit rate films. I for example rip all of my blu rays into a .mkv container, which gives me file sizes of around 30gig on average - I use a HTPC to play these back

I bought a 42LA620V for my folks this christmas and it is pretty amazing TV for only £449.99, I have a Panasonic GT50 and have been a bit of a plasma snob but I was seriously impressed with the image quality and features on this TV.

I can confirm it will play MKV's I ripped my entire movie library about 2 years ago to appease the other half and get most of the dvd's / blurays out of sight, the largest file size is Avatar and the TV had no issues playing it from a USB HDD.

Great thanks what size is avatar?

I've tried three 3d films all about 10-14gb and all stutter via the apple TV when played. My other films are normal 5gb and they work perfectly. I'm going to try them at 720p and see what size they come out.

Fall that I need to get a large USB stick and chuck one on there!

The TV is fantastic the picture quality is excellent so much better than are last TV!

I have a 3D rip of Avatar that's 49GB, I can try playing it on my LG TV when I'm home in the next day or two and see how that gets on.

No problem playing any mkv's on my LG 760T here mate. Had files as big as 25Gb playing fine in 3D ;)

Saying that I access them from my NAS but don't see no issues using a HDD attached directly as they should be quicker to access.

Only problem I have had is with certain MKV's that don't have the english audio track as the default one not allowing me to change to english. Not a problem though as a quick wizz through mkvmerge sorts them out.

Gents thanks very much for the reply.

I think the issue it's with the apple TV as I've converted one to 720p so it's only about 4gb and it plays fine.

So I think I might actually shell out the money to buy a stick to try the full fat 1080p copies or even have a bash with my laptop over WiFi.

If you could try the giant 49gb version and let me know that would be great!
