Minimum for 4k monitor?

512bit bus or not, 4gb is not enough for 4K unless you want to turn the settings down which defeats the point of 4K.

How much VRAM did AMD say we needed for BF4 @1080, they have warned us lol.

Conjecture, i have yet to see where 4GB is not enough for 4K and the GTX Titans are not far from twice as expensive.

5760x1080 with full details in Crysis 3. Would you want to recommend a card that might not have enough VRAM? One more screen would push that over 4GB IMO.

No it would not as i assume that comes from a Titan. You Nvidia guys have been saying for a long time that the more memory you have the more that a game will cache. You can't change your tune now. The only tests that matter are R9 290p/x at 4k. I have seen quit a lot of benchmarks and not one game has failed. In fact the last review i saw had the 780/ti v 290p/290x up to 4way sli/cf, i believe they were using max settings and only the 3gb cards failed on some games. The thing this review showed that 3gb was enough for the majority and even then the 3gb cards had decent averages which probably means they were only slightly out of memory.

I asked a question on what I used with VRAM and I have been told time and again that 2GB isn't enough for even 1080P, so I was trying to be diplomatic and allow others to answer. I am not saying that 4GB is enough or isn't but allowing the OP to see for himself. Saves all the grief and petty arguments I thought but seems even a question and a VRAM usage graph gets people all worked up :(

These are games around now that will use more than 4gb @4K, you can argue that the game is caching memory or not but it still makes no sense to buy 4gb cards to run 4K. Even if 4gb cards can scrape by running the current games (I am not saying they can) what happens with the next gen of games which are just around the corner.

It is inappropriate to recommend 4gb cards for 4K unless you want people to be disappointed, they may even give up on PCs and buy a next gen console.

That's like saying don't upgrade to 1600P unless you run max settings, i don't buy it at all. 4gb will be plenty for 4k and by the time its not you'll likely need more grunt. I'm sure if you turn every setting up to 11 you can exceed 4gb in one or two titles but you'd likely need 3/4 gpu's to do that and have the grunt required to push the fps. The OP will be fine with 2x290 or higher at 4k imo. Various reviews around the web back up my 2cents as well. I would swap my 1440P Ultra settings for 4k Very high settings in a heart beat so i don't buy into your matra that if you have 4k you absolutely need the highest settings +8x MSAA.

buys 2,000 pound monitor. Reduces in game settings...

Daft.

That's not really that strange tbh as when people were first making the jump to 1600p monitors some were saying they no longer needed aa or dropped it down to 2x. More pixels on screen, the jaggies stick out less and less memory needed. It's not so stupid when you think about it.

Crysis 3 at 4k with 4xAA......

In the review it was stated that the 3 gb cards suffered from the odd freeze up where as the 4 gb cards did not. Even then you can see that the 3gb cards have a decent average meaning they were just about playable with 3gb. The other 2 games i ain't sure enough about but crysis 3 looks not to be even close to 4gb judging by the 3gb card results.

I am guessing not many people would be happy to run with these fps anyhow even on the 4 way systems. So dropping settings thus lowering vram would be needed. We don't have the grunt by the looks of it even on 4 way systems in this type of game so 4gb is enough.

Those are not max settings in Crysis 3
