Got a new LG TV can I play .mkv via USB?

OK an update!!

Using plex to share just the 3D films straight to the TV over WiFi the large file play perfectly!! They quality is epic!

So to anyone else who wants to do this just download plex it links straight away to the TV and hay ho the .mkv file play without modification.

Have TVs moved on past the point of not being able to output a 5.1 (or better) signal to an AV receiver via ARC yet? Seems utterly pointless streaming Blu-ray rips straight through the TV if the audio is limited to two channels.

Anything half decent will do then. Although I run my HTPC through an amp so the TV has nothing to do with audio anyway.

That's because your PC is doing the decoding and merely streaming it to the TV bud.

I prefer direct access from my NAS rather than having to go through a PC - unfortunately Plex is quite resource hungry and needs a core 2 duo @ 2Ghz to encode 1080p content properly - hence unsuitable for most NAS's.

Glad to hear your happy with it though! :)

I tried to use plex, would connect to my cheapish LG in the bedroom, can't remember model number but basically it has DNLA and thats it which was perfect as it meant a 42" for the bedroom I can stream, my movies to for only £250.

That cheap TV connects fine, however my 50" Panny GT50 can't see it, either can my macbook air, the server is being run off an iMac in the office upstairs which is always on anyway, driving me nuts.

Have you logged in?

Checked port settings?

Guys, anyone with a 2013 LG tv and using plex as your delivery system should download this plex app for your tv. Works the exact same way as xmbc etc, is way way better than the stand media share app that is built in.

Shove it into a USB stick within the folders Lgapps/installed then go to your apps, more and select it from there.

Already got the Plex app pre-installed on my 2013 LM55760T - is this newer?
Last time I tried to use it, it was a bit sluggish unfortunately! oh and plex was interfering with my blade box :(

It's also a shame plex isn't supported by the WDTV - thats the missing piece to my puzzle :(

Big-Mac, any chance you have tried using the DVR function?

I shoved a spare 1TB drive into theirs so they could use the DVR functions, now despite saying you can record a show and watch another, on their set it will only let you record and watch the same channel.

Will look into it, they refuse to have any pay for subscription service like Sky or Virgin as 99% of what they are interested in is on Freeview or movies they own, so thought the DVR functions would be a nice boost, indeed my mum is enjoying the ability to pause live TV quite a lot so at least that's something.

LG tv's

Have a look if you already haven't for the LG TV remote app for smartphones(android and apple) as this also usually uses your phone's keyboard for entering text i believe. :)
