Anyone getting fed up with the relentlessly increasing prices over the years?

I've got my renewal coming up at £3,452... (Southend - Liv St).

A few questions spring to mind:

1) Anyone got any helpful advice on the cheapest means to get an annual season ticket between Rayleigh and Liv St? I've always got a ticket from Southend Victoria as it's the same price as Rayleigh.

2) I rarely see people with annual gold cards... more often people seem to be using orange travel cards... any reason for this? I doubt so many people can be so hard up / can justify paying so much over the odds!

3) A lot of people seem to use the gates rather than put their tickets through the barriers.... suspicious that there are a lot of forged tickets out there...?!

Comments, thoughts, suggestions welcome! :o

Can your workplace do anything? A lot of them can take the money from your wages and save on NI and tax that way? You can save several hundred pounds a year.

is it cheaper to get a Southend to Romford then a zone 6(?) oyster to cover the rest ?
I doubt it, but MissChief's sounds more likely too.

...which would then need to be declared to the HMRC as a Taxable Benefit the next tax year and they would claw the tax back through your tax code.

Season ticket loan through your employer or own funds will be the cheapest option. As Hades quoted, It needs to be taken out after tax/NI otherwise you will have to declare it later on.

The season ticket alone should save you around £500 over the year!

Season ticket loan is irrelevant as is done after tax and I'm specifically looking at ways to pay less, not stagger the amount over a longer period.

I already get an annual ticket, just don't want to pay so much.

I pay £1800 into Clapham Junction for 40 miles each way which seems the same distance as Southend to Liverpool Street however mines a really quiet line.

I can't drive cheaper and I get free parking so mine seems like good value, I'd suggest yours is as well unless you used two wheels.

Clapham Junction isn't a central london terminal and so is significantly cheaper.

Used to pay £3k~ for my season ticket, always either bought annual with cash or loan though work (non-tax deductible).. Did hear stories of some colleagues rolling with ancient tickets, but that is reliant on a few factors that could get you in a bit of trouble if caught...
