Shame. 7-8 miles is a really nice distance to commute.

I'm on the bike tomorrow (for work). Looking outside, I think it's going to be COLD :D

tbh I prefer the +3 to -3c temperature outside for cycling rather than ~8-10c where its not warm but it isn't cold either so you just sweat like a pig and feel uncomfortable.. -1c is probably the perfect temp for winter ride - if its dry..

and its going to rain tomorrow so wet and dull.. glad I'm off till 6th :o

Incase anybody missed it posted earlier in the thread, Guy Martin is on channel4 just now trying to break the land speed record on a bicycle.

Guy Martin is awesome, i loved his programmes on engineering too.

(apparently Laura Trott is on this one as well :D)

Last ride of the year for me I reckon. Pretty windy out there.

So, quick review of my goals for the year:

1) 3,000 miles for the year - I managed somewhere around 3,080.
2) 100,000 feet for the year - I managed about 134,000.
3) 10,000 feet in any given 4 weeks - Pointlessly easy, achieved ages ago.
4) Metric century - Done on my birthday in March. Went one better with an imperial century in July.

So, pretty successful all told! Now to think about next year...

My summary of the year, with no targets:
3100km - not great, but I don't commute (bit difficult with 40 miles each way), and did virtually nothing outside until May mainly due to Tendonitis
36000m climbed - 1/3 of that was just in Tenerife
211km biggest ride - Dragon ride, no surprises there
1879m biggest climb

But I've also spent nearly 4 days on the turbo trainer over the past year which kinda makes up for some of the lack of km :)

Given last year I had only one metric century I'm pretty pleased, but next year I want to step up further, keep going with the weekend rides, try and join a club and get prepared for the 300km Dragon Ride and Etape du Tour! I feel like I need another challenge for next year though and I'm not sure what yet, I'm wondering about doing some of the alps before/after the etape!

That is an epic ride.
Just over 25 hours elapsed time, it's difficult to even stay awake riding for that long!

Did you see his comments on the ride?

long riding dude said:
Hi David, thank you very much for your comments. here are some facts from this ride: before to leave a ate some jacked potatoes and beans, after the first 100km, i stopped to eat some flapjacks (they work well for me) and i bought a can of nutrishment from Nestle (you can find it in almost all petrol stations, and i love this product, it gives you back mostly everything you`ve lost during the exercise). as hidration i tried them almost all, but what it works well for me is Go Hydro tablets from SIS. i use two tablets/bottle. next stop was at 250, i felt the need to eat something salty, unfortunately the only shop opened at that time was a fish and chips one, so i ate some rubbish there. i chosed to ride during the night, because i thought it will be no traffic at all, and yes i felt like king of the road for a while ;) ... but then it started to rain for like 2 hrs, i don`t mind the rain, but not when are 2 degrees outside. my suit started to freeze, i barely managed to bend my arms. the water started to leak into my shoes (note to me: buy proper cover for your shoes) also i needed to stop every 20km to walk for a bit to unfreeze my hands and my feet. next stop was after 350km, i ate a big sandwich with a lot of eggs, and then a small pot of different nuts mixture (unbelievable how much energy you can get from these nuts). Unfortunately at this point my front chain set decided to stop working, so i was forced to use only the middle gear (i have 3 in front). this problem slowed me down a lot, that`s why so low avg speed on this ride. and ... that`s it! ;) maybe next time we ride together (i would love to have someone riding with me). oh ... and 2 cans of redbull, at some point, just to keep my eyes open ;)

So from the sound of it he stopped at 100km, 250km and 350km.

Summary of my year:

No riding in January... started logging rides properly on Strava in February and I started racing end of April/May time, started off in D/C grade. Found it mega hard to begin with despite having what I thought was pretty good fitness. I was riding 35-40k solo rides 2/3 times a week before I started to race.

Took me 2-3 months before I was upgraded to B grade in the middle of winter, most races in winter are a little longer with more climbing which suited me better. I struggled to keep up on the flats, did a metric century handicap race where I got a really bad handicap and got dropped after only 30 minutes. Just missed out on going under 3 hours which I was a bit disappointed with but rode most of it solo.

I went on holiday in August and hurt my back straight after at work so I went back to C grade as I did almost 2-3 weeks off the bike.

Got back into B grade at the end of Sept time, after 2/3 weeks of suffering I was able to keep up. Got dropped in the Western Div B grade road race in the last 5km :( Started riding my rollers more to help build power for the flat as that's where I was struggling.

Bought my Cervelo in October and it was amazing compared to my Giant. Instantly boosted my performance and I was keeping up in B grade OK. Even shaved my legs to celebrate, tanned lean muscles look so much better than massive velcro sticks! Since buying it I've never been outside the top 5 in the club races!

Came back to the UK in November and fell off first time out on the Giant taking all the skin off my leg. Little bit silly really, but healed OK, just have several scars as a reminder...

Raced the Western Div Criterium in December, hoping to improve over my placing in the road race. Ended up finishing 4th in a sprint finish, the three above me have all moved up to A grade now. Had a big handicap race before Xmas, went in with the fast B grade group (with some of the guys who beat me a few weeks before), kept up OK and was happy with how I raced doing more than my fair share on the front, photos below.

Since then been away but kept up riding, 50km this morning and set a load of new PR and improvements, either the week and a bit of easier riding helped, or doing some weights, either way I'm not complaining.

Just over 6500km for the year, if I'd ridden in January and taking into account the other month I took off through holiday/injury I'd have probably done another 1000km. 56500m climbing and 210hrs total on the bike.

Next year I'd like to aim to do 200km+ a week and try to make the jump to A grade, at the moment its closer to 150km on average due to work commitments. To do 200km+ I'll have to do several mornings of 50k and then a couple of evenings of roller work, plus race on the weekend.
I'm not sure if joining a gym to do static weights would benefit me or not. Would be good when I'm back too late to ride, or its too hot etc, not sure I'd get the benefit of the money spent.

Purchase of the year, aside from the new bike as that's a given; probably buying my rollers. I have the Elite AL13 with variable resistance, I've been able to train quite well on them and it's easy to notice improvements and ride a set pace.

Dud of the year for me, probably the Endura 3/4 length winter bibs. The fit was never amazingly good around the groin area, and the zip up the front a little pointless. Ended up ripping them when I crashed in England so they went in the bin and I'll look elsewhere to replace them in winter.

Few racing pictures, I'm in the Garmin jersey (matching the Team to the Bike ;) )

I make a nice big hole in the wind to follow!
