How do they look?

The reason I ask is that I have a Panasonic 720p 50PX60B plasma which has been rock solid for the last 7 years. Copes brilliantly with standard def material - which I still watch a lot of btw.

Want to enjoy next gen consoles but reluctant to splash out £1000'ish on a new 50" 1080p TV. Would I be missing out on much running next gens at 720p?

Cheers,

S

I had as 40inch samsung 1080p lcd tv that was 7 year old and I was using that for my ps4 and xbox one. A few days ago I picked up a 46inch samsung led 1080p tv and even that made a huge difference for me so I woiuld say yes you are missing out. Even going from lcd to led makes it look so much better with the better blacks and vivid colours

Thanks for response...I get what your saying but my 7 year old plasma has always had excellent blacks and vivid colour...probably on a par with most current LED's. Also has very little input lag and seems bullet proof w.r.t image retention.

My question is really about the resolution.

I have just read this article which seems to suggest that unless you have a BIG screen, or sit very close, then it is very difficult to seen any difference between 720p and 1080p.

I sit 3.5m from my 50" screen so the chart suggests that there is no noticeable difference between 720p and 1080p.

I'm going to try and borrow a PS4 and XBone to check them out for real on my current TV.

Cheers,

Im sure those charts are proved false (you may see results irrelevant of them).

Personally I wouldnt let it stop you getting them, yes it would improve picture, but I doubt it'll be akin from the jump from SD>720p. It's certainly not a requirement to have a 1080p tv for xbox one or ps4

For example:
Playing GTA 5 on my ~7 year old samsung LCD 32" 720p tv
Playing GTA 5 on parents ~2 year old soony 32" 1080p LCD

The main difference I noticed was improved colour depth. But remember it doesn't actually improve the game!

(And yes I know gta5 is a pretty low res game thus a better comparison would be a 1080p game )

At 50" you should be able to see the difference even sitting that far back. The old Panasonic plasmas are fantastic though, I had a 42PX60B that I sold for a 1080p LCD screen (about 6 years ago) and massively regretted it.

replace it with a new Panasonic GT60 1080p set while you can still buy decent quality plasmas ?. Theres far more to the current latest gen plasmas than just a resolution difference. Better inputs, more features, better picture quality, don't have to worry about plasma reaching the end of its life (they don't last forever and will run out eventually) The list goes on.

Affordable 50" OLED TVs are a long way off yet so I say upgrade to the last of the panasonic plasmas while you still can.

I've been lookng at new TV's too...
there's people on AVForums who upgraded from a PZ80 (newer 1080p version of your PX) to the GT60 mentioned above and say there's a huge difference
Sony W9 LED gets great reviews too

considering LED is on its way out, and the only thing I will replace my plasma with is an OLED, I'd say its worth the upgrade.

50" OLED affordable TVs are a way off yet. And if he's had his current set 7 years, its definitely time to upgrade while you can still buy quality new plasma TVs. Then replace it with OLED in another 6 years or so.

Lol...just bit the bullet and bought a new Panny 50GT60 plasma for £1199. Delivery this Thursday.

Hoping it will be as good as my old 50PX60B and last me for at least 4-5 years until OLED becomes mainstream.

Next mission...buy a PS4!

I've just picked up a 42GT60 and it's amazing!

I can't remember the last time I actually saw a black screen (opposed to varying shades of grey), it's obviously not as eye blindingly bright as an LED TV with the backlight turned up but the contrast still looks miles better due to the blacks. There's no problems with backlight bleed, dirty screen effect or anything like that either.

I'm just waiting for widespread stock of PS4's to accompany it now.

Here's a stupid question maybe...

Does 1080p on a 32" screen make graphics and text smaller when comparing it to 720p on a 32" screen?

Have to mention I'm tempted to, I have one of the afforementioned 42PZ80's and I am tempted to swap out, but really not sure I can justify the cost, especially as if I did pay the cash, I'd probably want to go 50".

The PZ80 has certainly done a good job for the £599 I paid for it 5/6 years ago.
