Powerline Adaptors and Extension Leads

Hi Guys,

I'll give a quick outline of my issue.

In my study/computer room/mancave there is just one plug socket

There is an extension cable plugged into this which then has my various computer power leads plugged into it.

The router is downstairs and again the power situation here is limited.

At the moment I am using wifi and to be honest the signal is ok. It varies between 70-150MB/s but it is stable so I can game and use the internet happily.

I've read that powerlines don't work well through extension leads and in this case both powerline adaptors would be plugged into one.

Do you think there is any benefit in me getting some powerline adaptors or would the extension lead factor make them slow/unreliable?

Would the best way to offset the slowness of them be to purchase 500MB adaptors to achieve a decent speed even with the speed loss from the extension leads?

In my experience extention leads with powerline adapters makes little difference however this depends on the quality of extention and what else the lead is powering (interference). I'd advise a proper hardwire cable but you can but try. I'd strongly advise against wifi and powerlines.

I had powerline adapters in my last place, the downstairs one was in a extension lead and the one upstairs was in a socket all on its own.

the house had virgin 100mb line and upstairs i could get 45mb all the time with no drop outs in 2 years.

If the downstairs adapter was in a socket all on its own then the speed would have been better but 45mb was more than enough for me,im quite sure the powerline plugs were 200mb ones and a value brand from ocuk.

It depends on your place as well. I've tried powerline adapters in this house and get < 1Mbps out of a 16Mbps line when plugged in upstairs.

I use pass through 500mbps adapters as I only have one available socket and they work perfectly. Get the full 80mbps from my bt infinity over them.

You can convert a single socket to double socket with a converter. They do not cost much and then you can use powerline without any issues.

I've used these to increase the number of sockets in an old house.

I use the TP Link 500 pass-thru ones and they are fine, you're best not plugging them into an extension as mentioned interference from other things (and also if the extension is surge protected) can make massive speed drops or even not work properly.

My suggestion would be to buy some, try them and if all is good then keep them but if not then send them back under ocuk's 2 week satisfaction thingy they have.

So I should turn my wifi off completely? Not sure that will work out well as I have mobile phones and laptops etc which use it.

No.

He means for any desktop machines, use cat5e cable.

For light laptop use and phones etc wireless is fine.

Look at the price of d-line trunking and wiring up each computer. Typically cheaper than inferior powerline adapters

I will get my new house rewired this year. In the mean time, I do have same situation as OP.

I have got powerline adapters TP-LINK 500mbs ones from OCUK this week, and they work perfectly. I have got the one downstairs going into a socket on its own, but upstairs I have it going through a Belkin 8-way surge protected extension socket. Works perfectly, and I don't notice any slowdown in real use, nor through speedtest.
