Headset/headphones up to £160

Im looking for a pair of headsets or headphones for up to £160, primarily for gaming and a bit of music. ill be using it on a asus xonar d2x soundcard.

i like the look of this headset and was thinking of purchasing it

YOUR BASKET
1 x Razer Tiamat Elite 7.1 Surround Sound Analog Gaming Headset £159.95
Total : £169.55 (includes shipping : £8.00).

to be fair looking at the reviews on it a lot of people have had a great experince with it, if your looking for full immersion gaming or just sound, then they same to be brilliant for it, i have some gamecom 720's for my pc and ps4 and they are 7.1 and i think its brilliant for it seeing that pair is even tempting for me.

Will the razer headset render my sound card useless? those beyerdynamics are over my budget

My friend has the same headset and i quite like the sound on them, just wondering if getting headphones will be better or should i sell my sound card off unless the razer will actually see a benefit from my sound card

I was recommended the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro.

They come in it about £130 and you could easily source a mic for the extra £30.

That's what I have (80 OHM) along with a ModMic and FiiO E10. Beyerdynamic is a company that's been making quality headphones for over 70 years.

a lot of forums i read on people have an opinion that most headsets deliver poor sound quality compared to proper headphones? is this true?

I've also seen a lot of praise for the beyerdynamics dt770s pros, i have a desktop mic which i could always use

to antony101 and neuk, what is your opinion on the beyerdynamics? are they good (for gaming not too bothered about music although it is nice)

I've not bought them so can't comment at this point.

The DT770's are good for games, movies and music. I like them but, some people think they have too much bass. So if you gaming competitively the greater emphasis of the DT770 on bass can be distracting if you're trying to hear an enemies footsteps. I prefer the sound of explosions and gun fire over the more subtle sounds. Plus it also means that it makes action movies more exciting. If subtle sound is more important then go for somthing like the HD598's instead.

HD598's are open headphones aren't they?

Mostly yes. I think the problem when it comes to average or poor sounding headsets, is that the companies that make them know that many gamers have no idea when it comes to sound quality; so really they can make something that sounds lacklustre, and many gamers wouldn't notice as they have nothing better to compare to. That's not to say all are poor, but to get the ones that sound good, you've got to pay a premium. Not so much of a problem for those with £150 to spend, but for those with £50 to spend, they are really better off buying headphones instead. Then we get to 'oh, I don't want a separate microphone', and quite a few people just end up buying these average headsets in the end anyway, just for the convenience of it.

Apart from Sennheiser PC350SE/360, for under £200 headphones are always going to be better than a headset. As for these multi driver nonsense headsets, I'd much rather pay £160 and grab a pair of Philips Fidelio X1 headphones than pay £160 for a pair of plasticky Razer Tiamat crammed full of cheap drivers, that will likely snap in half at some point. Some people like those things though, so to each his own I guess.

Sennheiser PC350SE/306 are certainly worth considering if you want a microphone attached otherwise I'd grab a good pair of headphones such as the DT770/990 or Fidelio X1 and get a separate microphone.

I'm stuck between the DT770 and the X1 now. One is closed which I really would like as gaming at night can get noisy. But the X1s are so well rated.

Tried the razer tiamat 7.1s on my pc and i get an annoying hissing noise and music sounds crap on them, i prefer my samson sr850s to these. Tried it in battlefield 4 sounds good but the music quality and hissing is a dealbreaker so i won't be purchasing these. Going to do more research on the sennheisers and the dt 770s

I'm thinking about adding the X1 to my collection. There suppose to be dam good open cans.

a66as, just buy some cheap headset. Buying sound quality headphones can get very addictive. :D

Does ohm make a difference? whats the diff between 80ohm and 250ohm and will it be noticeable

I've come from a sharkoon x-tactic 5.1 headset (basically a tritton ax pro in a different shell) which is a 5.1 headset with multiple drivers in each ear, I'm now using a pair of Phillips X1's.

No comparison at all, the X1's blow away my old headset in every way. I use razer surround which is basically Dolby headphone but a software based version, sounds awesome.

Get a proper set of headphones and a separate mic, your ears will thank you!

Just be aware that the X1's do leak like a bitch, anyone in the same room will be able to hear very clearly what you're listening too, won't be a problem if you're in a different room though.

That's the conclusion for me, DT770 it is.

EDIT: Ordered, arriving tomorrow.
