Has anyone actually got WiDi (not wifi) to work

Hi all, trying to get my wireless display working on a new XPS12 (haswell) ultrabook. I want the laptop to display onto my tv (panasonic viera).

I have a WiDi receiver on my TV (Netgear PTV3000). The XPS detects the wireless display but I can never connect. A connection is attempted but then drops instantly. I seem to have the latest WiDi drivers which came in the Intel ProSet driver package.

It really should be easier and more seamless than this but I suppose we are talking about Intel here. Anyone managed to get this working? Also does it project 3D films/games as well (to a 3d panel?).

This is a common problem with the XPS12. Basically you're going to have to try out all the different driver packs that Dell have released for this product until you find one which works.

It's a shame because it works absolutely fine on my E7440.

Make sure you have the latest firmware on your PTV3000, you are using Windows 8.1 I assume? You should not need any specific WIDI software as Windows now has this built in. How are you trying to display to the TV in Windows, are you using the devices charm then project?

Yes nightmare99 I am using windows 8.1. There are Dell Pro-set connectivity/network drivers already installed on the system and my PTV3000 has the latest firmware.

To connect I swipe the right side panel and then click on devices and then project. It identifies my Viera TV and the TV displays that a connection is being attempted. Then the XPS12 panel turns black (as does the TV) for about 2 seconds as though it is about to project and then it fails.

Maybe I should uninstall the Dell Proset drivers and try without.

Use the latest Intel drivers for your wifi card from the Intel website, also I;m not sure if NVidia & AMD support Miriacast properly yet, perhaps in the NVidia control panel set it to use the Intel integrated graphics.

Ok I reset the PTV3000 to factory settings and then reflashed the latest firmware.

I then also used the intel widi update tool from the intel site which said I needed the latest ProSet Wifi drivers and it installed them for me.

I then tried to connect the xps (which only has integrated HD4400 graphics) to my viera tv. It gets as far as requesting a passcode on the laptop which is displayed on the tv. Then it tries to install some audio related thing and then I get the message "wifi connection is closed" and connection fails. Happens every time.

Seriously, Intel/Netgear, this tech is broken. Not being able to use this on a nearly new ultrabook is horsecrap. My PTV3000 receiver is basically an expensive paperweight now.

In the scenario you describe, is the laptop meant to be connecting directly to the TV or does the WiDi receiver connect to your router and then to the laptop?

Just thinking if your devices are connecting in infrastructure mode rather than adhoc, then the router may have some media streaming option that needs enabling.

It is supposed to connect to the wifi network. The funny thing is, I can project films to my tv panel using windows 8.1 and windows media player. So it is something to do with the intel drivers which have made everything unnecessarily complicated.

Edit: thanks, I will check the router settings to see if there is a streaming option but as above, it works with media player.

Is the TV saying "wifi connection is closed" or the laptop? Is it possible to retry with the device connected via Ethernet to the router until after the audio related install has taken place.

It is the TV that says "wifi connection is closed", not the laptop.

Ok slight snag is the xps 12 doesn't actually have an ethernet port, so it is wifi only. Just going to check router settings.

Can you log into the WiDi via its IP address to review / change settings like you can on router?
Am wondering if the TV thinks the WiDi is its wireless adapter assuming its connected to the TV's USB port.

I'm assuming you don't have any devices that are able to cast to the TV or is your Dell the only one that is meant to have this capability?

Does the WiDi device mention anything about ports needing to be open? Just wondering whether any firewall settings are closing the connection on the XPS.

Yes the TV connects to the network via an Asus RT-N56U router which in turn connects to a Virgin superhub (latter only as a modem). The Widi receiver settings are extremely basic and don't allow any IP address changes. Only allow some checkbox options about power savings and the Intel processor gens compatible with the receiver.

I have deliberately not connected the Widi receiver to the TV USB port but have it powered via mains and connected to the TV via HDMI only.

The Widi receiver doesn't mention anything about ports. It has a basic startup screen saying it is ready to be connected to.

Viera apps like youtube, netflix work fine on the TV.

Here are a couple of screenshots of my RT-N56U router settings. Can't see anything about streaming. Should I change anything?

The TV sounds broadly ok then, I take it the TV is configured to get an IP from the routers DHCP?
Does the network map in the router settings show the TV and the WiDi on seperate IP's?
Anything in Traffic Manager that could be set causing a clash?
