Looking for advice as to which os to buy I'm going to build my pc this weekend which will be used for some gaming but also a multimedia centre to clear the extensive DVD collection.
Which os would you recommend?

I have been a massive windows 7 fan for along time now and after trying windows 8 I said I would never ever make the switch and for along time I never did, until my new build I heard some people where getting a few more frames per second with windows 8.1 and I though bleh why not lets try it worst case I can change back.

Once I installed 8.1 I disabled all the annoying things like the menus you access by hovering your mouse at various edges of the screen and also downloaded a small addon called Pokki which gives you a really nice start menu which I prefer to the standard windows 7 version, although Windows 8 gives you a start menu its quite a naff one lol

After downloading Pokki addon and changing Windows 8.1 to boot to Desktop instead of that stupid app screen I really like it its been running well and had zero issues :)

Least thats my experience/view.

First both are very good operating systems however Win8.1 has a few advantages ie better security and not getting old ie 4+ years old like Win7,Win8 will also be getting DX11.2 down the road for gaming as well.

Personally and I did,go for Win8.1 IMHO since you getting newer features, improved security and longer life span OS wise.

Btw I use VLC ,it plays anything I throw at it on Win8.1(free it).

Looking to buy a new one that's why I'm curious which one to get, I will be storing a lot films if this is a consideration

By storing do you mean it just sitting there with a share on it or do you mean you will be watching films on it?

It's quite important to know this as you could just put something like FreeNAS on there.

I've got all the recent versions of Windows running somewhere or other in my house. I'd happily recommend 8.1 to anyone for a desktop machine once the playschool elements of the interface are banished.

8.1 is very nice, would recommend it over Windows 7 (which I have on a laptop). Windows 8 was fine too but 8.1 rounds it off nicely.

Very fast too..

I've been thinking when I finally put an SSD in my PC in which is better to install.

The frustrating part about Windows 8/8.1 is you have to pay £50 then go buy/install various mods just to make it as usable as Windows 7 is out of the box.

Given the rate desktops are losing market share to tablets and businesses won't touch it I wouldn't be surprised if MS made it a free upgrade at some point. And relied on recouping the money through things like Office, Bing and their App Store.

Sorry... what?

I don't want to turn this into another "pro/cons of Metro" thread, but that really is utter rubbish (in my opinion) :)

So, you now have a full-screen interface for launching your applications, rather than a small menu.... so what?

I can count the time in minutes on one hand that I've had the Metro interface visible on my Windows 8/8.1 PCs in the last year. That's comparable to the amount of time in the previous year that I had the Start Menu visible on screen in Windows 7.

If you don't want to use the Metro interface, and just want to use desktop applications like you did in Windows 7, then you don't have to - even before 8.1 I just clicked the "Desktop" button on the Metro screen, and I didn't see it again until the next time I needed to launch an application that I don't have pinned to the taskbar, or when I next turned on the PC.

Jaw dropping lack of knowledge, have you even used Windows 8 or 8.1 for more than a day? The whole "windows 7 is better than Windows 8 at all costs" campaign finished a good few months ago.

Is around £70 still the cheapest for an OEM copy of Windows 8.1? Tempted to try the enterprise evaluation listed above but after the 90 days do I have to enter an Enterprise key or can I just buy Home Premium and use that key without another reinstall?

Have been toying on an off for a month now about whether to upgrade to 8/8.1 from 7 mainly due to BF4 min FPS improvements but even after using it on my mates laptop for the first time (8.1) I actually thought it was fairly easy to navigate and found out how to do the old style explorer copy/paste within seconds so don't mind making the jump but would rather not have to pay £70 for the privilege :p

Just seen its £50 for students! To be 10 years younger.

BS, as said by everyone else.

To the OP, get Windows 8.1. It's just a faster, lighter feeling, better supported OS to Windows 7. No doubt that Microsoft messed up hugely by not including the traditional Start menu, however quickly bung Classic Shell or similar on, disable all of the corner gestures, and you've got the same experience as Windows 7, with all the above benefits.
